JOCKEY CREEK AND ITS SOUTHERN BORDER, PINE NECK.
SIS 131 '
Jookey Creek and the land on its southern border called pine necks ."Yo nu
Ay happy recollections for oldtimers who grew up in the area around the, 1$808.
In severe winters there was good skating there ,and one season the Joe broke ul
on WashinKton' s Rirthday, ans a group of yauna skaters had difficulty getting
ashore. Crabbing in summer was good sport.
Pine Neck took its name from the handsome stand of pine trees that stood
on the banks of Joekey Creek,at its head by the main road, it was the only
grove of evergreen trees anywhere around ,eool and shady in summer, warm in win-
ter ,with raft needles under foot,t was a delight to walk through,or linger I&
Through the years wind and disease .gradually lessened the trees until the b-a
viprd Hurricane of September 2191938, taok the last remains of the beloved Pine
Grove. It belonged to Wells Phillips ,xhose home was the first on the left as
you turned on to Pine Neck from the Hog Neck(13ay View) road. Mr. Phill1Ps
cleared part of the hillside of underbrush and Stade a very attractive picnic
ground whieh was used for some years for Sunday School Picnicspand similar oc-
cassions.
In j( #The enterprising !Cr. Phillips built a Bowling Alley in the Grove
which proved popular for some ten years. The Peconic Bowling Club was formed
and that jolly group spent many happy evenings together. The membership is-
cluded, from the north road Floyd Vail,Rob Fitz,Archie Smith,Jakey Hipp; from
peeonic Lane Dr. Joe Case, George Prince ,Rufus Morell,Frank Overton; from the
South Road John Corey, Frank Youngs ,Addison Bakery and John Iioiell-
After the Bowling Alley had had its day ( ` 1)
ILr Phillips" divided the lone
building into three parts and they formed the basis for three little summer bun-
galows facing the ereek, the beginning of the cottarte colony **facing the creek
OR both shores today,
