r4o OLD SOUTHOLD TOWN'S TERCENTENARY OLj
The old Wiggins-Salmon house, circa 166o, stands among were
the lots of the Gardeners Bay Estates in East Marion. It is and I
charmingly restored and remodeled, and its present owner is Di
Mr. James W. Kent. Not far from there, down Shipyard Lane, Cree
in the lots near the Fish estate there is the John Salmon house Nous,
(cast wing of house), also 166o, its great chimney still intact. amor
Orient's fine old home belonging to Dr. Henry Heath bears tain
well its age. This home is referred to by Orient people as the press
Thomas Terry or the Mulford place. The town historian be- Conl
lieves it to have beer. the John Peaken Tavern of 1656. At cents
the Point's end stands Orient Point Inn, 1795, which has seen lived
interesting history within its doors. Midway from village to at th
Point there are several interesting old houses. The Jonathan who
Terry house is said to be of the 17oos, by Spencer Terry, de- "Gr:
scendant and present owner. The sign marks of the house, over
Herbert M. Hale feels, show great antiquity, and a deed of O
land sale of 1735 helps to signify its age. Mat
Southold has more remaining houses than the other villages its h
as she may be called the mother village of them all. The quaint focal
' little house at the east end of the village which bears a Celebra- Jam
tion marker, "Jeremiah Vail House, 1656," has recently been hom
restored to beautiful condition by Robert Lang, present owner. les

The Douse, formerly standing on property near Tucker's Lane, the
was moved eastward to its presentsitc. It is as though the Johr
occupants of other day-s mig rt again return, for fresh white Hot
curtains flutter at the windows. Nine panes compose the top hon:
half of these windows, six the bottom. The new but Olden- Colo
styled, hand-rived shingles, weathered, are on the side of the butt
house. The doorway retains its severe simplicity. A rough- (M
hewn fence surrounds the dooryard. mid.
1 Miss Emma Rutzler's house on Youngs Avenue, for many Ma
years claimed to be Southold's oldest house, bears its door- Bell
yard statement telling of Colonel John Youngs, son of Rev. Nor
John Youngs, dwelling therein; the house belonging to the —20.
years of the first settlement. Miss Rutzler believes her home to smit
be of 1647 vintage. Old boxwood and flower beds border the beer
walk, and timeless buttonwood trees shade the door. During Gal
the, 275th Celebration it played an important part, and now, des(
for the 3ooth, was designated a meeting place for many a re- grafi
turning Youngs. Previous to fairly recent renovation its sides 183
