THE FOUR CORNERS
Where Youngs Avenue crosses Main Street at the traffic
light {and I never thought I'd live to see a traffic light in South-
old!) one corner looks the same. It is a pleasure to see how
beautifully Joe Hartranft keeps up the fine old house that was
his father's, our beloved Doctor Joseph Hartranft.
On the northwest corner where the Savings Bank stands
was the Southold Hotel. Travelling salesmen who were then
called `;Drummers" came by train or horse and buggy, stabling
their rigs at Corey Albertson's Livery Stable near the railroad
crossing, and lodging at the hotel while they interviewed the
local merchants. Business and professional men patronized the
bar and often lunched there. Years ago we had Local Option
and the voters decided whether the village should be Wet or
Dry. So sometimes the bar was operating and some years it
wasn't, but the proprietor, nice, big fat Mr. Hoinkis, never
seemed to lose any weight.
Thinking about the hotel, I'd like to tell a little more a-
bout Uncle Jess Case. He was a scholarly and erudite man with
a great sense of humor who prepared for college at the SOUTH-
OLD ACADEMY, graduated from Yale and the Yale Law
School. Grandpa sent him to Gottingen University in Germany
