Th~ Hamlet of Peconic was originally called Hermitage. In 1880
its population was 455, and in 1909 it was 700. It has always
been noted as excellent farming country. A group of artists
~stablished their studios here at the turn of the century and
many of their homes survive today.
A number of historic structures will be found in Peconic. Three
of these have been described by Joy Bear in her book Historic
Houses of the North Fork and Shelter Island. 1981.

D~SCRIPTION
In 1874 Richard Mather Bayles describes Peconic as a rich and
beautiful farming section, with the center of the neighbour-
hood a~ Ithe railroad station, three miles east of Cutchogue,
containing ths.po~t~office, two stores and one or two shops.
"Hutchinson's Creek rambles into the land from the cove on
the south side called South Harbor, and Goldsmith's Inlet
enters th~ north shore from the sound."
Today the buildings "at the center of the neighbourhood" are
all extant.
