It in- cludes Goldsmith Inlet at the north on LonE Island Sound and Indian Neck at·the south on Little Peconic Bay. The hamlet ia traversed by N.Y. State Route 25 which is the historic Main Road, by the Long Island Railroad,and by County Road 48 which is a 4-lane divided highway. The main business district with the school and post office is on Peconic Lane north of Main Road and south of CR 48. The terrain is mainly flat. (cont.) SIGNIFICANCE: Th~ Hamlet of Peconic was originally called Hermitage. In 1880 its population was 455, and in 1909 it was 700. It has always been noted as excellent farming country. A group of artists ~stablished their studios here at the turn of the century and many of their homes survive today. A number of historic structures will be found in Peconic. D~SCRIPTION In 1874 Richard Mather Bayles describes Peconic as a rich and beautiful farming section, with the center of the neighbour- hood a~ Ithe railroad station, three miles east of Cutchogue, containing ths.po~t~office, two stores and one or two shops. "Hutchinson's Creek rambles into the land from the cove on the south side called South Harbor, and Goldsmith's Inlet enters th~ north shore from the sound."
