DATE OF INITIAL CONSTRUCTION:__Ja50s _ shoD 1902 _ ARCHITECT: BUILDER: 20. HISTORICAL AND ARCHITECTURAL IMPORTANCE: A small round brick cellar was not unusual on Long Island where the round form - like a well or cistern - was prac- tical in the sandy soil. The cellars were originally mainly for storage of vegetables. 21. SOURCES: Form by Winifred Billard, 1974, for the Cutchogue- New Suffolk Historical Council. Chace. This unique con- struction although only one brick in width is strong enough to hold back thf• Long Island sand because of the arch principle. This cellar is also . found in thr. Cape Cod house of this era. Cape Cod, like Long Island, is a land of sand. A recent communication from Mrs. Clinton Finger, Jr. has rc- ported such a round brick cellar under j, the. old Williamson house on Skunk Lane in Cutchogue. a From SPLIA Prpsprvation Notes Fall Wintpr 1979,p. 5 Photo from C.
