density country road of some historical importance.
Its rural character and its many houses ,create .an inte—

2-story, 3-bay second floor, 4 bays side entrance first
floor, gable roof house . House has a round brick cellar.
Small shop on property was built by Wm Kling, who worked
for the owner Ed. Price during the threshing season. It
SIGNIFICANCE was used also as living quarters. *

20. HISTORICAL AND ARCHITECTURAL IMPORTANCE:
A small round brick cellar was not unusual on Long Island
where the round form - like a well or cistern - was prac-
tical in the sandy soil. The cellars were originally
mainly for storage of vegetables.

ROUND BRICK CELLAR
Another Long Island feature in our
continuing series on Long Island char-
r acteristics is the small round brick eel-
lar found under houses of the circa
1830-1840 period. This unique con-
struction although only one brick in
width is strong enough to hold back
thf• Long Island sand because of the
arch principle. This cellar is also
�. found in thr. Cape Cod house of this
era. Cape Cod, like Long Island, is a
land of sand. A recent communication
from Mrs. Clinton Finger, Jr. has rc-
ported such a round brick cellar under
j, the. old Williamson house on Skunk
Lane in Cutchogue. a
