1. NAME OF DISTRICT:
2. COUNTY: Suffolk
Hamlet of Cutchogue
TOWN/CITY: Southold
VILLAGE: ~-b. Dgl,~
3. DESC~PTION: The hamlet of Cutchogue is bounded by Mattituck on the
west, by L.I.Sound on the north, by Peconic on the east, and by Peconic
Bay on the south. The main part of the hamlet lies along Main Road
(N.Y.State Rte 25) for a distance of three miles. Like its neighbors,
it is an extensive and highly cultivated farming area. The land is level
and gently rolling. The soil is naturally good and the farms are large.
The southern part of the hamlet is composed of a series of necks
divided by creeks. On one of these necks there is the hamlet of New
Suffolk. Lying off an adjacent neck there is the penninsula called Nass~
Point where the land is hilly rising to a height of sixty feet. Nassau
Point is a medium-density residential area.
Main Road is p~ralled by a four lane east-west main artery -CR48- and
by the Greenport branch of the Long Island Rail Road.
4. SIGNIFICANCE:
The hamlet of Cutchogue was named in remembrance of the tribe of
Indians which once occupied the North Fork. It is a settlement of
great antiquity as it was commenced only a few years after the first
settlement of the town. It is located on the site of an Indian village;
as also is the case with Mattituck. The hamlet today is noteworthy for
the Indian Fort Corchaug and for its rural character.
