One noteworthy segmant Suffolk
-d County's maritime history appears
~ to have been nearly f0'rgotten -
few today are aware that the first
submarine base in the United States
was located in New Suffolk, on the
shores of Little Peconic Bay..
John P.Holland, the inventor of
the modern submarine, launched his
sixth creation, the Holland VI, in
Elizabethport, N.J. on May 17,1897.
She was 55 feet long, powered by a
45 h.p. gas engine, and a 75 h.p.'
electric motor, She was armed with
two pneumatic guns, six projectiles,
one torpedo tube, and three torpedoes.
After a prolonged effort to con-
Vince thc Government of th~ merits
Twenty-five years of tireless
p:erimentation had brought John Philip
Holland to the pinnacle of his career
on the very eve of the twentieth
century.
The New Suffolk base was in oper~
arson until 1905, building and test-
ing later types of submarines.
Through the courtesy of Mr. Floyd
Houston, we have a collection of rare
photos of the base, the men, and the
submarines, and a fine biography of
John P. Holland.

OUR SUBMARINE BUILDING PAS'I'
Did you know that the first submarine
eommi~iuned by the Navy was built and
stationed at the site which is known today
as the North Fork Shipyard? You can find
out more about the history of the East End
as a submarine building center at a
luncheon at the Galley Ho Restaurant,
located behind the North Fork Shipyard in
New Snffolk. The luncheon, which is being
sponsored by the Suffolk Council of the
Navy League of the United States, will have
as featured speakers Navy Commander
F.W. Keith, skipper of the nuclear
submarine USS Stonewall Jackson, and a
representative of the Electric Boat
Company, formerly the Holland Torpedo
Boat Company which pioneered the design
and construction of the underwater craft
· that evolved into today's nuclear
-'. submarine. The luncheon will also feature a
slide presentation and a disvlay of unusual
old .photographs of submarine building
activity on the North Fork. For further
information about the luncheon, which 'is
being held on October 13 at 1:00 o.m.
contact James Sauer, president of the Navy
League's Suffolk County Council, at 727-
