Hathaway House—East New Suffolk—Razed 1957
The waters of Cutchogue Harbor offered both a challenge and a
degree of safety to the budding sailor. In the 1920's and 30's, the
North Fork Yacht Club flourished and weekends saw the graceful
Star boats racing over the waters. The clubhouse was located in the
woods, facing Fast, and was reached by a dirt road off New Suffolk
Road. When it was disbanded during the depression, the building was
moved across the bay to Nassau Point where it became the home of
Tim Norris.
Shortly before 1937, a group of young people started an informal
club at the Old Cove on Nassau Point. It weathered a number of
storms, including the war years and has grown into the present(Ad
Cove Yacht Club, located near the mouth of Schoolhouse Creek at
the end of Old Harbor Lane. Here the children take sailing lessons
during the week, and they and the adults hold assorted races on
weekends during the summer season.
