Schoolhouse Creek and the Old Masons Shipyard
clown from their cradles. From here boats are sold all over the
world. The \ w Suffolk and on Schoolhouse Creek berths
many sailing and poxver boats at the slips along the arms of the
creek, as well as doing a lively business in maintenance. During World
War 11 when it was Mason's Shipyard, there was a factory there for
the manufacture of oars for the Navy. Across the street is the Preci-
sion Propeller Works, once Curt Horton's repair shop.
The Galley Ito Restaurant is a popular all year round place to eat jr
specializing in seafood. Off Main Street, it is literally surrounded by
boats on sea and land. Captain Ahab's on First Street is also open
twelve montl1s of the year and provides entertainment upon occa-
sion. In the 1940's and '50's, it was known as the Harbor Inn and
was a popular gathering place of the young. The Emporium next to
Captain Ahab's is open weekends during the warmer months and
features distinctive gifts. For many years it was Johnson's Delicates-
sen and more recently, White's.
The residents of New Suffolk are fiercely loyal and proud of their
village with its sea-locked streets and its rather off-beat quality. They
Lire friendly to outsiders, but when property changes hands, the real `~
estate people seldom handle it. New Suffolk takes care of its own.
