Failey, Old School Houses Nassau & Suffolk 1976, MK-71 No. 25 SL Mattituck Historical Society Grounds Route 25,Nla—tt—ituck, New Yor The earliest official records of this well-preserved schoolhouse start with a trustee's report to the Commissioner of Common Schools in 1839. At that time, $20.50 had been received from said Commissioner and applied to teacher's wages. This schoolhouse has been moved several times, renovated and sold in 1857 for $150. The two-room school (ground floor and basement) pictured is now standing on the grounds of the Mattituck Historical Society. It was used until 1890 when larger quarters were needed. — — from Early History of Mattituck Schools by Philip R. Tuthill -- Long island Traveler and Mattituck Watchman, June 20, 1946 No. 27 ■ls P. East Main Street, Cutchogue, New York -- -- This old schoolhouse was built about 1840 and was moved to the grounds of the Cutchogue-New Suffolk Historical Council's Village Green in 1961. Before its restoration, the building was used to house migrant farm workers, as were so many of the abandoned schools on Long Island. It was restored to its original appearance by Mr. James Van Alst, who designed the "Village Green", an attractive spot on Route 25. The building contains a "blackboard", a room-wide wooden panel painted black, the original of which came to light during the work of restoration. Other features included in the restoration are the tine cove ceiling, the platform for the teacher's desk, the chimney hole for the original wood stove, and the handmade wooden coat hooks in the vestibule. The Council has collected and housed in this building a good collection of schoolbooks of the period in which the school was used for educational purposes. — from the files of the Whitaker Collection Southold Public Library Southold, New York 25 er•i 1969 • • • The old IvIattituck School House before being moved toHistoricalgrounds.
