SIGNIFICANCE 19. DATE OF INITIAL CONSTRUCTION: 1860's. Probably after Civil War. ARCHITECT: Unknown BUILDER: Most likely built for Samuel Sheden. Samuel Sneden, age 54, occupation not given; his wife; three children and two servents lived in the ?0. HISTORICAL AND ARCHITECTURAL IMPORTANCE: house in 1870. (U. S. Census, Mattituck 1870) A mansion built either as a summer residence or year-round home for a man probably not a native of the town. Perhaps the first mansi_-)n to be built in this farm community. The Snedens left Mattit;eek some time in the 1870'x. The ho se was kno-r-n as the Odell House in 1880 when sold by the Southold savings Bank in that ye, to Mrs. Thomas Hallock (L.I. Traveler 1/20/1880.) In 1892 was purchased by Jacob Bro-dm from Miss Carrie Hallock and con-- _ verted to a hotel in 1892. It continued to hese paying guests until the present day.
