Mr. Terry, a Civil War veteran, is said to have used a room in his home as an early Post Office. However, the first recorded postmaster in Laurel was Oliver Atwood, who was appointed on February 18, 1898. He had bought and was occupying the old Franklinvil!e Academy and for a while the front room in the Academy was the Laurel Post Office. r . ,r About 1900, Oliver Atwood, built this small Post Office building on the north side of the Main Ro just east of the Riverhead-Southold Town line. It is now a part of a restaurant east of the original site. A second Post Officebuilding, west of the former Franklinville Academy is the present Laurel Post Office. 79
