Krupski, Jr. President, Southold Town Trustees Southold Town Hall 53095 Main Road PO Box 1179 Southold, NY 11971 Dear Mr. Krupski: Southold Town Board of Trustees Thank you very much for responding by phone today to our recent letters. We would like to add here a few more important details. Our osprey platform was erected on April 13, 2001. A pair of ospreys claimed it two days later, worked on starting a nest, and left in the fall. THE BAYM~N DIDN"T OOME TO OUR S~CTION OF LONG CREEK THAT SPRING, AND THE OSPREYS WERE UND,.'i'~TRED BY THE NORMAL SPRING AND SU~94f~ TRAFFIC The ospreys continued nest-building in early spring 2002. But in mid- April many baymen came at the same time, sf~e of their boats within only a few yards of the platform. After about a week of this daily disturbance, the ospreys abandoned the platform; WE BELIEVE THIS PAIR IS I~9~ATURE, NOT HABITUAT~U TO HEAVY CONCENTRATIONS OF BOATS SO NEAR THf~ FOR SEVf]{AL HOURS AT A TIME. This year the ospreys have been nest-building since about April 3. Not until today have any baym~n appeared near their platform. Would the Trustees please consider excluding the baymen from our section of Long Creek until the fall? We look forward to meeting the Trustees when they come to appraise the situation here -- we hope before the 2002 story repeats itself. Very truly yours, Daniel N. Slatkin Mara B. Slatkin 241 5 Long Creek Drive Southold, NY 11971 April 5, 2003 Trustees, Town of Southold (Dept. of Marine Resources) Town of Southold Main Road Southold, NY 11971 Gentlemen: On April 1 we wrote to you about the Town-approved osprey platform on our shoreline. In mid-April 2002 the ospreys that were building a nest on it were spooked awayby the many baymendredging for clams there. A pair of ospreys is now ACTIVELY ENGAGED in building a nest on this platform. We believe ospreys are protected by law, and we repeat our request that the baymen not be allowed onto this section o4 Long Creek this spring or any spring. Yours truly, Daniel N. Slatkin Mara B. A pair of ospreys spent the summer there and began building a nest. In early April 2002 the ospreys returned and continued working on their nest. However, in mid-April the baymen came here dredging for clams, eight or nine boats at a time, and within a week the ospreys abandoned their nest. Now ospreys are again interested in the platform -- but the two orange boundary markers are again in place, and we fear the same disruption of the ospreys as occurred last year. We earnestly request that the baymen not be allowed onto this section of Long Creek this spring or any spring. Yours truly, Daniel N. Slatkin Mara B.
