Good morning.
I am happy to meet with you. I believe that during the last transportation meeting you all
discussed what kind of policy you wanted to create. I emailed you the RESO from Riverhead
showing how they nominate. It is here below.
Do you recall when Det. Simonsen had his street co-named for him in Riverhead? Under the
official street sign, they erected a memorial sign. Here is the RESO:
04.16.2019 ADOPTED TOWN OF RIVERHEAD Resolution 2019-303 AUTHORIZES THE
HONORARY NAME DESIGNATION "DETECTIVE BRIAN SIMONSEN WAY" ALONG
SOUTH JAMESPORT AVENUE Councilwoman Giglio offered the following resolution,
which was seconded by Councilman Hubbard WHEREAS, New York Police Department
Detective Brian Simonsen grew up in Jamesport, Town of Riverhead, New York and
attended and graduated from Riverhead High School in 1995; and WHEREAS, during his
high school career, Detective Simonsen played varsity football and baseball, crowned
homecoming prince, volunteered for community events, including Special Olympics,
and was known and remembered for his generosity and constant and kind smile; and
WHEREAS, Detective Simonsen continued his academic career at Roger Williams
University and, after graduating in 1999, he attended the New York Police Department
Police Academy; and WHEREAS, Detective Simonsen served in the New York Police
Department for 19 years; and WHEREAS, on February 12, 2019, Detective Simonsen
responded to an armed robbery and was killed in the line of duty; and WHEREAS, the
Jamesport Fire Department has requested that the Town honor Detective Brian
Simonson's life of public service and dedication to our community with the honorary
designation "DETECTIVE BRIAN SIMONSEN WAY" along South Jamesport Avenue.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Riverhead Town Board hereby authorizes
the honorary designation "DETECTIVE BRIAN SIMONSEN WAY" along South Jamesport
Avenue; and be it further RESOLVED, that all Town Hall Departments may review and
obtain a copy of this resolution from the electronic storage device, and if needed, a
certified copy of same may be obtained from the Office of the Town Clerk.
If you wanted to legally change the name of the street it would require other
action. However, I believe your intent was to add a dedication of street name as an
honor, which has no requirements. I have no other information because there really
isn't any formality. It would be up to the Committee to decide policy.
Thank you.
JULIE M. McGIVNEY
Assistant Town Attorney
