Please allow me to clarify from my last email. I appreciate you considering my thoughts. When I mentioned in my last email- about the table and a bin or two- I thought your question was referring to how I envisioned the artwork being shown- not to the yard sale specifics. If the zoning would allow for art to be offered in front of one's home (a separate request from the yard sale increase request)- it could be a very simple set up although some artists might want to put up a grid for showing framed pieces. I myself would probably have a table and a few bins and the art on a small area of the lawn area. I happen to be located in an R-80 zone on the Main Rd in Orient. I believe at this time that only agricultural items are allowed to be offered for sale on the premises. However, if this could be expanded to allow fine art (original artwork) to be included in the list of allowable items- and perhaps written material (books)- this would be a great thing for the community (cultural art appreciation), and also for the artists (spectators and possible art collectors). Even if this stipulation mandates that the art would have to also have plants/flowers (agricultural items) alongside with the artwork- I think that could be workable- as it will help keep the agricultural feel, while allowing for the sharing and appreciating of fine art. My other request was for the town to consider allowing homeowners to have more than just 2 yard sales a year. Preferably up to 6 a year. The east end loves yard sales- and it brings people together more in the community. I've met neighbors and local friends this way whom I might not otherwise have met or ever talked with. I hope the town will consider this. Yes, I do notice some homeowners have tables out with things for sale (fire wood, and sometimes other items). But I would feel better about adhering to the code- and don't feel comfortable doing something that goes against that. I know that last year the town was looking for input from the community with ideas and suggestions. If you (via the town)- are still considering things, I hope this will be a consideration. I look forward to hearing back from you. Thank you. That sounds great about the yard sales! Please keep me posted on when that change could be implemented. For the art- I'm envisioning a table, and maybe one or two artist bins. Wall/grids are not necessary for this kind of thing - although some artists might like to use those to hang framed artworks. If so, some may want a canopy- and would need weights to withstand wind. However, I think just a simple table (maybe umbrella) and a couple of artist bins should be fine. Also, the art could be alongside plants/flowers to go along with our agricultural area. I look forward to hearing back from you again about this, and your thoughts, and on what the town may consider. We will certainly consider your idea to increase the yard sale frequency. And the idea to allow artists to display and sell their art in front of their homes – what are you envisioning? A building? A tent? Just a table out front? I am a Realtor with Douglas Elliman on the North Fork, and I am also a fine artist. I came to a few of the sessions you led about Zoning in Southold. Thank you for doing that. Are you still interested in listening to community members about the new Zoning the town is working on? At one of the meetings (at the North Fork Chamber of Commerce meeting that was held at Sannino Vineyard) I had asked you whether the town would re-consider current zoning which I believe does not allow main road residents to be able to offer their original fine art and/or books/printed matter in front of their homes for sale. 3 And also there is a limitation of only 2 yard sales allowed each year. Might the town re-think this and allow residents to do more than 2 yard sales a year? You had asked me to send you an email, and I am finally doing this (it took me a while!). During Covid- the town has ceased from only allowing 2 yard sales a year. Did the town find that this was an issue? Might they re-consider going back to this? I'm wondering why the town is not more flexible about the above (yard sales, or selling fine art/printed matter/books. Allowing people to be able to have yard sales more often would be very helpful to some homeowners who are trying to scale down on too much stuff that other people want. It gives a very small source of extra cash for the homeowners, while providing the community members and visitors to the area something they enjoy going to without it causing excessive traffic issues. Last weekend I had advertised in the Suffolk Times on Monday for my 2nd yard sale (that is their deadline even though the weather is uncertain until Tues or Wed). I waited until Friday to get the permit. But my real estate work got the best of me and I was unable to end up making it to Southold before 4 pm! Thus, I ended up having to cancel the yard sale- as I didn't want an issue with the town. I did not know if there would be a fine involved either. I looked on your website and couldn't find any information about that. I thought it best to just cancel the plans - so did so. I look forward to hearing from you about the above, and if the town might be able to reconsider the limit of just two yard sales, and also be flexible about people being able to show and offer their original artwork and books on their properties. Thank you. Best, Suzette 4 Suzette Delia Reiss Cell: 516.815.5657 To help protect your privacy, Microsoft Office prevented automatic download of this picture from the Internet. 5
