This resolution was declared duly adopted.- · - ~ Supervisor Martocchia stated a Proclama~i6n Ca~lling~-attention to ~ Law Week M~y l~through May 6, 1977 and signed by Hon~ Martin Sute~, Hon. Louis De~areSt, Hon. Francis Doyem'would be publish'ed~under his name in the local newspapers' next iSsUe. Justice Suter commented on the request of the Mattituck ~men's Softball League, in"which request'they state, that "Southold Town has no recreation department and has de~ftly skirted any responsibility to its youth." He requested the Supervisor to explain what'the town has done and is'doing for the.youth, of the communityl---Supervisor Martocchia stated that if they were to analyze the~budget, $200,000.00 a year is tied int~ recreation,~-such as ~management of the many beaches in the town with lifeguards,, beaeh~attendants, cleaning, insruance. There is another program of~$t2;000.00~which goes to' the schools t~o extend their recreation program into the summer rather than stopping in J~ne. The town gets three times the value of our money by giving to the schOols rather~than-trying to do it ourselves, which would ~e a duplication. The schools have the'equipment, qualified p~rsonnel, etc. If the town were to do it they would have to hire a recreation director at an approximate $15,000100 'salary, an assistant, typewriters, telephone, stationery, car, and~it would run between $40/000.00 and~ $50,000.00. Right now the equipment is~in th~ schools and available as well as the p~Dfessional directors at the schools.--The Town does co-support many leagues and the cost is higher than tke $12,000 in the budget, $41000.~ for the youth and $5~000. for the senior citizens, it is far-above'that.~ The town would like to do much more for'recreation, but they must ~nswer to the taxpayers.--'-Miss-Thilberg~asked when they may expect an answer?--~Supervisor Martocchia stated he~ust received approval today to dispurse the money-as fairly as possible. '~He will make the apportionment shortly. Mrs. Dorothy RobOhm spoke to ~e'~Board~about the hazardous-condi%ion~ at the post office cross~g in Southold, ~buld it be possible to get a four-way stop sign or light or pedestrian crossing sign; stop for pedestrians? She does not feel a traffic officer is sufficientl She ~as under the impression that when the'road was~resurfaced the. State. promisedLthey~would'turn it o~er to the town, apparently they never d~d. The parking field is in very bad'.condition, it was'not plowed correctly this pa~t winter, it'was difficult to walk', the sidewalk was never.cleaned. -Mrs.~Robohm~feels this~situation is something that should be'corrected~.by next winter. She asked~if the merchants. could be purs. uaded to leaVe their cars in.someother parking lot than the post office one. The~re is insufficient parking without the merchants parking there.~-- Supervisor~artocchia stated the town is a~ware thi~ is a bad crossing, extra lights have been put in to illumina, te the area better. For the purpose of relieving some of the traffic in the parking area the town is renting quite a large parking field ~ a block away, and the ~erchants are the'biggest violators in not using this parking. A little more cooperation is~. needed. The parking lot across from the~post office is ~intly owned by the Town.and Park District. It was thought the post office~ was going to move out of that area, but they ~have s i~ned a new lease and they are going to stay where they are. The town tries to keep traffic officers there as ~uch as possible. He will talk to Councilman Rich whQ is familiar with the_ area to see if he has any suggestions for rel~ieving the si~uatiQn.-~,CounciLman Rich ~stat~d he is disappointed the po~t office did not m6~e~howe~ar W~ a'r~ st~ck With it where items, 'an~.-some~h'ing must be done abou~ ~ths parking.--- Mrs. Robohm suggested~a' possible butt~n~typ~ ac~ivat~,~o~ ~"~i~ht '0n a pole; however, Supervisor Martocch~a stated this could be a dangerous 'situation. ---A study of the situation will be made.
