Name: Toni Bryan
Respondent ID: 114877166491
Q1: General Feedback: Do you feel the proposed zoning updates reflect the
needs of your community?
Incentivize the use of empty buildings. Provide some type of tax credits to redesign rather
than build new, if that is not being done already.
Q2: Land Use & Zoning: Do these updates make sense for how you want to see
land used in Southold?
No response
Q3: Which zoning rules or land-use changes—if any—don’t work for you?
please continue forward
Q4: Housing & Affordability: Do the updates support the kind of housing you
believe Southold needs?
No response
Q5: What—if anything—would make housing options better for you and your
neighbors?
12 units on 1 acre seems tight. Would the proposed zoning changes allow for the Capital
One Building to be utilized as affordable housing?
Q6: Natural Resources & Environmental Protection: Do these updates
adequately protect Southold’s natural resources, such as water, wildlife, and
woodlands?
No
Q7: If not, what else would you like to see in the zoning code for environmental
conservation?
I am pleased that you will discourage paving to decrease run off into the creek, bays and
sound.
Q8: Community Character & Historic Preservation: Do these zoning updates
help retain the character of the Southold you know and love?
No response
Q9: If not, what do you think could be improved to preserve Southold’s unique
charm?
Remove all temporary signs that appear on utility poles, trees and entrances to parking lots.
Restrict large banners . Upkeep of permanent signs. Plant trees along the Rte. 25 corridor
as permits. Soften the hardscaping of parking lots with trees and/or shrubs.
Q10: Traffic, and Safety. Do the proposed zoning updates adequately address
concerns related to traffic congestion and pedestrian safety?
No
Q11: If not, what changes would you recommend to improve or prevent further
traffic congestion and improve pedestrian safety in Southold?
Love Lane restricted to either one way traffic or parking on one side only. Parking spaces in
shopping centers are too narrow for all the large trucks and SUVs. Difficult for smaller
vehicles to pull in and out of spaces safely.
Q12: Support for Agriculture: Do the zoning updates provide sufficient
protections for Southold’s farming industry and farmland preservation?
No response
Q13: If not, what changes would you suggest to further support agriculture and
prevent the conversion of farmland to non-agricultural uses?
A comment was made at the Mattituck/Laurel meeting about the amount of water used for
farming, specifically sod farms. We cannot have it both ways. Houses would use water also,
if the farms were not in operation.
Q14: Economic Development: Will the proposed zoning changes foster
sustainable economic development while balancing environmental and
community concerns?
No response
Q15: If not, how could the zoning updates better support the local economy
and businesses?
I do not know at this time.
Q16: Additional Comments
I felt that there was an underlying negativity regarding affordable housing at the Mattituck
meeting. I also feel some in attendance want to stop more people moving here. "Tolls" to
park at farm stands and housing inspections are highly objectionable to me. I also find it
insulting to hear North Fork residents malign Riverhead. There is a case against the amount
of commercial development on County Road 58, but we all shop there and use Riverhead
services. Be sensitive to our Riverhead neighbors.
