Q1: General Feedback: Do you feel the proposed zoning updates reflect the
needs of your community?
No / I do not know at this point if any of it feels right. I am going to just specify 2 for now.
Accessory dwelling units. Two of my immediate neighbors each have one. They were built
for a child in each case. One was lived in for awhile and the other, except for holiday
company probably not their child, has had the specific child live in it. The one has a full
kitchen, by that I mean full house size appliances and a fireplace. From what I read of the
code 2 people could live in one. How many are going the be permitted in the Town? What
effect are they overall going to have on water consumption, cesspools? We do not have
sewers in my area. What about increased traffic? How do the Fire Departments feel about
these? The one next door to be is connected to a propane tank and is bordered by
woodland. What is the fire exposure? What about the additional exterior lighting. Code
Enforcement and Exterior Lighting changes are my item 2. Based on the amount of
neighbors lights that shine in my windows year round and what I see when I am out at night
Code Enforcement never goes out and rides around from 11:00PM until 5:00AM to see
exactly what goes on.
Q2: Land Use & Zoning: Do these updates make sense for how you want to see
land used in Southold?
No
Q3: Which zoning rules or land-use changes—if any—don’t work for you?
We have enough traffic, events, wineries, etc. Do not turn us into the South Fork.
Q4: Housing & Affordability: Do the updates support the kind of housing you
believe Southold needs?
No
Q5: What—if anything—would make housing options better for you and your
neighbors?
No accessary dwellings.
Q6: Natural Resources & Environmental Protection: Do these updates
adequately protect Southold’s natural resources, such as water, wildlife, and
woodlands?
No
Q7: If not, what else would you like to see in the zoning code for environmental
conservation?
All this building is moving the animals (deer) into the roads.
Q8: Community Character & Historic Preservation: Do these zoning updates
help retain the character of the Southold you know and love?
No
Q9: If not, what do you think could be improved to preserve Southold’s unique
charm?
Cut back on some of the modernization.
Q10: Traffic, and Safety. Do the proposed zoning updates adequately address
concerns related to traffic congestion and pedestrian safety?
No
Q11: If not, what changes would you recommend to improve or prevent further
traffic congestion and improve pedestrian safety in Southold?
It is never going to be ok. We keep increasing the number of tourists.
Q12: Support for Agriculture: Do the zoning updates provide sufficient
protections for Southold’s farming industry and farmland preservation?
No response
Q13: If not, what changes would you suggest to further support agriculture and
prevent the conversion of farmland to non-agricultural uses?
I do not know enough about farming to say.
Q14: Economic Development: Will the proposed zoning changes foster
sustainable economic development while balancing environmental and
community concerns?
No
Q15: If not, how could the zoning updates better support the local economy
and businesses?
Get some of the empty buildings into use. Like the old North Fork Bank buildings on the
Main Rd, Youngs Ave, empty spaces in North Road Commons.
Q16: Additional Comments
I said this years ago to Scott Russell. I have vacationed here since 1965, became a full time
resident in 1983 bought my home in 1988, but if today I had to stop at the traffic light at
Main Rd and Factory by the CVS and 7/11 and looked around I would keep on driving.
Some commercial business and stores are very necessary but the residents of Orient have
the right idea.
