The Chairman opened the hearing by reading application for
a special exception~ legal notice of'hearing, affidavit attest-
ing to its publication in the official newspaper and notice to
the applicant.
THE CHAIRMAN: Is there anyone present who wishes to speak
for this application?
MR. ALF ANDERSEN: I speak in favor of the application for
the A & P.
THE CHAIRMAN: We were in agreement with the extra height
for this lollipop sign but 5 ft. setback would have to be abided
by.
MR. ANDERSEN: We are in from the road about 14 feet on the
Main Road side and 10 ft. from New Suffolk Avenue. It should
have been put in the proper place I realize that.
THE CHAIRMAN: The people who actually install these signs
do not seem to care so they place them where they please and it
creates an awkward situation.
(There was considerable discussion relative to the location
of the pole sign which is not under application. The Board had
previously advised Mr. Andersen by letter that the pole sign
would have to be placed in the correct position at least 5 feet
from any property line before the erection of entrance and exit
signs.)
MR. ANDERSEN: The parking signs under application were
put in with just the words "A & P". The si~ is 4 ft. by 5 ft.
and is the usual size. The sign is 3½ ft. in from the property
lines.
MR. BERGEN: you can have "Entrance? and "Exit" signs but
you cannot have'~ & P"on them. That would make them advertising
and you are not permitted any further advertising on the property.
(There was considerable discussion held relative to the
location and wording and size on the proposed entrance and exit
signs.)

THE CHAIRMAN: is there anyone present who wishes to speak
against this application?
(There was no response.)
After investigation and inspection the Board of Appeals
finds that the A & P storeat the corner of Main Road and New
Suffolk Avenue, Mattituck~ New York is in need of "Entrance"
and "Exit" signs as a part of the operatbn of their business.
It is felt these signs are in the interest of the public.
The Board finds that the public convenience and welfare and
justice will b~ ~rved and the legally established or permitted
use of neighborhood property and adjoining use districts will not
be permanently or substantially injured and the spirit of the
Ordinance will be observed.
On motion of Mr. Gillispie~ seconded by Mr. Berg~n~ it was
RESOLVED that the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Co. be
granted permission to erect and maintain 1 ft. by 2 ft. "E~trance
and'~xit" signs at the two customer parking entrances at their
store on the corner of Main Road and New Suffolk Avenue~ Mattituck~
New York. The words "Entrance~ and "Exit" are the only words
permitted on the signs, as well as an arrow if desired. These
signs may be lo~ated as close to the property line as seems
desirable for safety purposes.
It is a condition of th~ special exception that the lollipop
sign located on the northwest corner of the property be relocated
to its correct position 5 ft. from any property line before these
signs are erected.
