Dear Supervisor Krupski and Town Board Members,
RE: Land Use and Zoning Code draft document
After reviewing the current draft in the bank lobby, we have several observations and
suggestions.
1. In table 280-49-(2) "permitted sign types by district" the awning sign is not listed as
being permitted in the CB district. However, under 280-49 "signs" (G)(1)(C) shows
awning signs are permitted in the CB district.
We hope this is an oversight. If you look at the permitted uses in the "CB" district
there are many permitted uses that could benefit by an "awning sign" for shade and or
identification by the public.
2. Under section 280-49 (G)(1)(E) "the bottom most portion of the valance shall be at least
8'-0" above the finished grade." As far back as we can remember the rule has always
been 7'-0" in the Village of Greenport and the Towns of Southold, Shelter Island, East
Hampton and Southampton. The 8'-0" height is not practical. It will not provide
sufficient shade. One must recognize that a sign on an awning can quite often be
secondary to providing shade. Additionally, 8'-0" does not improve the safety factor over
the current 7'-0" height.
3. A conflict exists between 280-49 (D) 14 which says "projecting signs" are prohibited.
Whereas 280-(49) (6A, B, C) shows a"projecting sign" example with specs. Which is
correct?
Pg 2.
We understand this is a work in progress and adjustments will be made. If you need further
input from me (Jamie) I can be reached at 631-466-1616.
We would like to congratulate the planning department and consultants. The layout of the
documents and ease of finding information has been well done.
Sincerely,
William J. Mills III (Jamie)
