HomeMy WebLinkAboutBradley, J 7.2025 concern I have with respect to allowing commercial aquaculture operations, specifically oyster farming, in otherwise fully residential R40 Residential neighborhoods. There are a number of R40 Residential properties located within the Town of Southold that are impacted by commercial mariculture \[oyster\] farming operations conducted on relatively small plots of land. While we in Southold recognize that oyster farming is an indispensable undertaking and a wonderful occupation that, in appropriate locations, frankly should be encouraged. Further, it should be noted that my wife and I are members and financial supporters of the SPAT program at the Cornell Cooperative Extension, however we firmly believe commercial oyster farming operations should be conducted in locations that are zoned suitable for commercial / industrial operations. I invite, indeed encourage, the members of the Zoning board to visit my house and see firsthand what we are subjected to. During your visit you could then experience what we live with: the smells, the rats, the noise (tumblers, power washing of cages, etc.) and see the general visual appearance what a full-blown commercial oyster farming operation looks, see the parking situation on our private road and the sounds and smells, all on a .462 slice of on acre - then try imaging yourself and your families living next door to this operation, an operation by the way that all materialized, dock and all, years after we purchased our property. All of this before even considering the potential that employees \[Farm Worker Housing\] could now be lodged at the property. For all intents and purposes, we now live in an industrial/commercial area. We no longer enjoy the bucolic peace and quiet that we enjoyed before the oyster farm appeared. Our peace and quiet is now second too and subject to the whims of the daily commercial operation taking place on the property next-door \[975 Cedar Point Drive West, Southold, NY 11971; Please appreciate the depth and scope that this for-profit commercial operation is now subjecting our otherwise peaceful and quiet community too. As you can see from the above, I have many observations and comments that I could make, and I would be happy to do so if you would like me to come in to discuss, this if you have any questions or further need further information, please do not hesitate to contact me at JBradesq@gmail.com or 917-715-9175.
