This letter is to request that a traffic light be installed on the corner of Oaklawn Avenue and the Main Road. I recently moved to my current address which is right at the end of Oaklawn Avenue on the North side of the Main Road on October 1 / 1997, My children and I were thrilled to being living so close to the OakIawn School as well as being close to town. Unfortunately my happiness was short lived. j am unable to give my 10 year old son the privilege of going to the school to play basketball or play on the playground unless I come cct and literally stop traffic for the' children to cross the street . We have the painted white crosswaly but apparently no one stops for Oadestrians. I usually start inching. out so the vehicles can see me, then if I ' m lucky enough to get someone in the weltbound lane to stop _I move cut further but I don' t let the kids comeout yet until I get someone from the eastbound lane to stop. Cars have actually swerved around- the person who stopped for us and nearlyrun us over . This is nuts ! I am like a lunatic out there. I make eye contact with each vehicle that races by and they don' t seem to know why I am waving. my arms. Please, I am not the only persoq who, wants a light on this corner . . Every child should have access to the school grounds -at off hours for recreation or soccer practice, etc without risking their lives. The elderly pecpIe in the neighborhood also have a terrible time crossing. I would like to personally invite you and every member of the Board or whoever it is that votes for things like this to come sit on my porch and watch the chaos for 'onIy fifteen minutes. I promise you that within that fifteen minutes you will witness several near misses. You will watch as children, who don' t have a crazed mother like me with them to rant and rave until someone stops, will wait at the corner ` for someone to top and then finally will take an unnecessary chance because they are imp tient . You will witness adults in vehicles waiting at the corner of Oakl6wn to .make a right or left turn taks innecessary chances t3cause of their impatience. Please, please bsiore you vote come witmess all this for yourself and I guarantee you cauld not vots against a traffic light in good conscience. \ .[ !_,_!(I(I+_tt b+_'i 1+:2 Y't that I .am the only .+p"_ter +.ln +:sal iz, ever +,.,+i t+t: .1 letter ' l r e q t_!t:'_t a. ;l:; •'l J.+9 h t ci t• t i 1. 1.+C a ti+:+'...I. The elderly people in the neighborhood also have a terrible time crossing. ` I would like to personally invite you and every member of the Board or whoever it is that votes for things like this to come sit on my porch and watch the chaos for only fifteen minutes. Please, please before you vote come witness all this for yourself and I guarantee you could not vote against a traffic light in good conscience. I cannot believe that I am the only person who ever wrote a letter requesting a light at this location. People think that the traffic is only bad mq the weekends in the summer . Southold is so populated now that the traffic is heavy on any day of the week. When the new school is built it w ^'ll mean more buses, more parents dropping children, more children walking and generally just more traffic . Yes there is a crossing guard during school hours but last week we had an accident even though he was there. Thank goodness no one was seriously hurt . This time. I am originally from Flushing and found that in Queens usually a traffic fatality would finally result in a traffic light being installed on a problemmatic corner . Please don' t let this be the case here. I thought I had moved myself and my children to a kinder more concerned community. Thank you. ^ Sincerely C 0 Jea McCoy ---- cc : Community Board The Traveler Watchman .
