Supervisor Martocchia introduced David SDohn and ~0hn Duell, local individuals involved in aviation, who met with the Town Board in the morning session, relative to a site for a small community a~rP0rt.~-~Spohn stated~that their project is to establish a DEC small airport, general avaiation airport, with full service, that is 0pe~tl~ona± after dark. The present situation is such at the Matt~tuck Air Base., ~hi~ch-~ ~ good part'of the econOm~ O~ th~ Town, has a national and international reputation for overhauling aircraft engines. Their location is in close proximity to houses and is noise sensitive. When the lease with the Town was signed the Air Base put in restrictions that there would be no night operationsm no training., ne touch and goes and no alt taxi operations. The goal of Mr. Spohn and his group is to find an open area, to establish an airport, not much bigger than what exists in an area that will allow' these operations. It would be to the benefit to all. Mr. Spohn further detailed their objectives and answered queskions posed by individuals in the audience. Mr. Spohn stated they are p~esently putting together a slide presentation of areas that do exist that ~ould be adaptable 'for a ~mall community aprport.-- Councilman Drum stated that the facility at the Ma~tituck Air Bas~ as it exists today, in his opinion, it not adequate for night flying for everyone, expert pilots, yes, but as a town airport it could be~ limited. Also there are homes on the northern end of the runway that are in the flight pattern and homes near the runway on the southern end. For this reason he has recommended to the Town Board in the renewal of the contract he does not feel that that airport is adeuqate as town sponsored, perhap-private.' Fo~ that reason along, if aviation is expanding in our community we must look elsewhere for an airport. It is not all personal of the present operator and owner, Mr. Wickham. The report of Councilman Drum should be available b~ March lst.-----Mr..David Driscoll, Southold, asked if there would be a public hearing on the matter of a new airport? Councilman ~rum said there would be. Mr. Driscoll stated he thought the Board was remiss, as far as the matter of the owrk pro,ram for. youth on the 'Highway Department, is not knowing how the pr,)gramw~s being developed.---Councilman Homan stated they did kn~ what they were ~ntering into, but they d~d not enter into ~kat t There was erroneous inforl Program they knew' about b Highway Department to go the paper said it was a P did not know about, they Labor p~ogram, and did no ~e paper said they were entering into. nation in one of the newspapers. The ~cause the Board passed a resolution for the into it.---Supervisor Martocchia stated ~obation Department, program, which they cnew a~out the'program as. a ~DeDartment of, have all the facts at the last meeting. Supervisor Martocchia wished everyone a happy, prosperous, and healthy New Year.
