JUN 2 4 2025 SOUTHOLD TOWN TREE COMMITTEE
REGULAR MEETING
May 21, 2025 HELD IN PERSON &VIA ZOOM
Southold Town Clerk 6:00 PM
Present: Committee: Gerard Orientale, Jay Jansen, Derek Bossen, Dan Goodwin—
Public: Taralynn Reynolds (Group for the East End); Dante Spielmann
This Regular Meeting of the Southold Town Tree Committee was called to order at 6:00 PM—this
was an in-person meeting—and held via Zoom.
The minutes from the March meeting were approved. (There was no meeting held in April)
Discussion Items:
Taralynn Reynolds (Group for the East End) attended our meeting to discuss possible means to
obtain some native trees for planting at Laurel Lake, namely street-sized trees that could
"withstand deer browsing." Gerard advised that Laurel Lake is part of the Town Park District and
that any plantings that would be done there would have to be approved by the Park District and
would come out of their Budget. As such he advised Ms. Reynolds that she should first contact
the Department of Public Works.
Derek reported that he visited the various schools on April 25 for Arbor Day — to make his
presentations and that the seedlings, bookmarks and activity sheets were distributed. He advised
that the remaining seedlings after distribution were handed out to the Boy Scouts.
Locations of several problem trees and replacements of same were discussed by the Committee
and added to the 2025 Fall Planting List.
Dan would like to see some pressure be put on the State regarding the terrible condition of some
of the trees located on the Main Road in Southold.
Committee discussed making a specific plan for the replanting of the dead trees in front of the
Recreation Center on Peconic Lane.
Prospective committee member Dante Spielmann attended our meeting this evening. As
information, Dante was given a copy of the list Gerard prepared of"Voluntary Assignments" for
each member as well as a list of general month to month procedure.
We will next meet on June 18, 2025. This meeting was adjourned at 7:15 p.m.
Respectfully submitted, Diane DiSalvo
