HomeMy WebLinkAboutTB-03/18/1980-SSOUTHOLD TO~N BOARD Special Meeting March 18, 1980 WORK SESSION The Board discussed the Suffolk County Civil 'Service list for Police Officer which was requested by the Supervisor. The first name on the list is Alfred Flakowksi, Jr., Main Road,Peconic. Chief Cataldo was directed by the Board to begin the processing of Mr. Falkowski for employment. The next Police Academy school begins later this month.--Chief Cataldo stated that if Mr. ~alkowski is hired the Police Departmetn will still be short at least two police Officers. 6:30 P.M. - Suffolk County Legislator Gregory Blass met with the Board to discuss Robins Island. He stated that Presiding Officer Anthony Noto has called a special session of the Suffolk County Legislature on April 24th and 30th to discuss with east end super- visors whether it is their desire that the open space policy be pursued, or any other projects, which would add to the price tag of Peconic County, Supervisor Pell said they would also discuss the feasibility study and referendum for Peconic County. Mr. Blass sadi that the idea of acquisition of Robins Island is not as foregone as one might think. Mr. Blass submitted two draft resolutions to the Town Board for consideration. One resolution addresses itself to the a~quisition of development rights of Robins Island and the other tO'~!a~thoriZing the Department of Land Management and Public Works to take all immediate steps for the proper mapping and ap~rai~ s. necessary for the initiati°N if a public hearing in accord the requirments for the condemnation of the property. Mr. aid that any legislation that goes before ~he County leu he would see that whatever legislation the Town wants included. There would be public hearings on the la,ute levels. The home rule concept will be followed ~e~y --Mr. Frank Bear was also present along with Mrs. ~ M.J. Brooks and Maureen Tuthill. Mr. Bear said they 1 of 1550 signatures.on the Save Robins Island He asked that the Town Board keep an open~mi~d. He hopes that it will eventually come to a point where the Town Board co'id, ~h stated provisions, adopt a resolution recommending the a~c~uisit~on of RObins Island as a nature preServe. L--County Legis- lager'Bi'ss suggested that County Executive Cohalan be contacted and aske~ to be prepared to discuss this issue at his Town Forum in SoBthoi~ilo~ Marc~ 26th. He also suggested that Mr. Cohalan be asked ~o invit~ Dr. Koppelman to be with him at that time. Chief Carl Cataldo said he has received a report made by the Budget Review Office of the County of Suffolk entitled "Analysis of Police Charges~--DiStrict/General Fund dated March 6, 1980, He said the report has some astounding statistics and charges which could possiblyadd $800,000 per year in taxes for the police district ina~ Southold Town. There will be a meeting at Holiday Inn on Friday, March 21st at 7:30 P.M. to discuss this report. County Legislator Blass said he would be at that meeting. Supervisor Pell said he would be there along with the Police Committee. A special meeting of the Southold Town Board was held at 7:~5 P.M., Tuesday, March 18, 1980 at the Southold Town Hall, Main Road, Southold New York. Tasker Deputy Supervisor Marie Bauer Johnson MARCH 18, 1980 Special Meeting On motion of Councilman Sullivan seconded by Councilman Dru~,~it was RESOLVED that those>bills audited on March 11, 1980 by the Southold Town Board he and hereby are ordered paid: General Fund Whole Town bills in the amount of $103,638.14; General Fund Part Town bills in the amount of $57,869.31; Highway Department bills in the amount of $35,352.14; and Fishers Island Ferry District bills in the amount of $54,476.31. Vote of the Town Board: Ayes: Councilman Sullivan, Councilman Murdock, Councilman Nickles, Councilman Drum, Supervisor Pell. This resolution was declared duly adopted..~ On motion of Councilman Drum, seconded~by Councilman Murdock, it was RESOLVED that Patrick Carrig, Southold, New York be and he hereby is ordered to be paid $2,000. of~his $4,000 bill for bulkhead work completed at the B~shes Creek B~idge. Vote of the TOwn Board: Ayes: Councilman Sullivan, Councilman Murdock, Councilman Nickles, Councilman Drum, Supervisor Pell. This ~esolution was declared duly adopted. On motion of Councilman Murdock, seconded by Councilman Nickles WHEREAS, Alvah B. Goldsmith, Sr. faithfully served the Town of Southold as a Southold Town Trustee for 34 years, setting the highest standards of public service and devotion to the people of the Town of Southold, and WHEREAS, Alvah B. Goldsmith, Sr. died on March 16, 1980, NOW, THEREFORE, WE, the Town Board of the Town of Southold do hereby RESOLVE in appreciation and memorium of Alvah B. Goldsmith Sr. to try to achieve the high standards of public service and devotion to the people of Southold exhibited by him. Vote of the Tow~ Board: Ayes: Councilman Sullivan, Councilman Murdock, Councilman Nicene,, Councilman Drum, Supervisor Pell. This resolution was declared duly adopted. (The Twon Clerk was directed to forward a copy of this resolution to the Goldsmith family.) Correspondence has 'been received from A.$. Taormina, Director of Marine Resources, N.Y.S., D.E.C. relative to the reconstruction of the Causeway at East Marion. Mr. Taormina seems confident from his point of view that there would be no damage if the N.Y.S., D.O.T. proceeded as planned. The Board has tried diligently to prevent~.harm to the waters of Peconic Bay and Dam Pond which they felt'mig~ht result from this construction. Supervisor Petl was ~e~uested to ask the D.E.C. to conduct monitoring studies before the start of construction and after its completion to confirm that no p~llution has resulted from the construction. On mo~ion of C~uncilman Murdock, seconded by Councilman Drum, it was RESOLVED that the~e being no further business to come before this Town Board meeting ~adjournment be called at 7:40 P.M.
