Box 1179 Southold, NY 11971 Soluthc4d Tovnn Abe rba Town Board Members, We are reaching out to you to request permission to close the road at the intersection of Village Lane and Main Rd in Orient NY on May 26,2025. The closure would be during the time of our ceremony at the monument and while we walk east from the monument back to the Orient Fire Department. The parade begins at the Orient Fire Department at 7:30am and usually lasts about an hour,we expect to be at the monument around 8am. We have been having this, parade for many years. Last year, was the first year our request for the road closure was denied. During the brief closure traffic can be detoured around this area. Orient Fire Department would be willing to help with signage and Fire Police if needed. This parade displays the true meaning of the day. Our members, along with members of the community participate in the ceremonies at each of the six monuments consisting of laying a wreath, a prayer and the playing of taps. The safety of our members and our community members are our top priority. Lat year's decision by the town to keep the road open made the conditions unsafe for everyone, and gives the opportunity for vehicles to get way to close to our members and community members. We want to mention that you approved the road closure for East Marion Fire Department's 100th anniversary parade last summer which closed the road for one hour with no way to get around the closure. If you have any questions or need anything else from us, please feel free to reach out to the Orient Fire District secretary at orientfdsecretarv@gmail.com. Our action plan for this parade has remained the same since 2022.When the parade reaches the monument at Village Lane,we reduce Route 25 to one lane to provide participants enough space to assemble in front of the, monument. We close off the eastbound travel lane and place cones along the double yellow line from Village Lane to the Fire Department.Once the ceremony concludes, participants walk to the FD along the closed eastbound Ian,e, (shoulder and sidewalk)which remains closed until all participants have cleared the roadway. Two officers are assigned at each end of the lane shift coordinating the flow of traffic on Route 25. For the EMFD anniversary parade, there was a detour around the closure at Rocky Point Rd. and Stars Rd. I spoke with the applicant and he believed that last year went smoothly, but was in favor of closing the road. I believe we can continue managing traffic for this event as we have in the past. If the Town Board approves the closure, we will be prepared to adjust the action.plan and detour traffic. Have a great weekend all!
