He was the loving,father of Laurie (Vito)Italia,Jeffrey(Mary) Gatz,Peter(Valerie) Gatz and Donald(Jacqueline) Gatz.He was the cherished grandfather of Jennifer, Courtney,Nicolas,Brianne,Abigail, Shannon,Tara, Kimberly,Kacee,Ian,D.J.,Tyler,Marisa and great-grandfather of Owen and Levi.He is also survived by his brother George Gatz of Florida and Eleanor Kowalski of Riverhead. Walter was a successful landscape contractor, starting his own business 60 years ago. He coached and sponsored many youth sports teams in Mattituck and Riverhead. Of his many hobbies and interests over the years,his favorites always involved his family. .. , His generosity, sense of humor and kind heart will be deeply missed. The family received visitors March 11 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated March 12 at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church in Mattituck,officiated by Monsignor Joseph W. Staudt. Interment followed at Sacred Heart R.C. Cemetery in Cutchogue.
