SOUTHOLD TOWN TREE COMMITTEE
REGULAR MEETING
Southold Town Clerk January 15, 2025 HELD IN PERSON & VIA ZOOM
6:00 PM
Present: Committee: Gerard Orientale, Jay Jansen, Jill Doherty, Town Board Member Anne
Smith; Supervisor Al Krupski - Public: Mike Domino, Tom Stevenson
This Regular Meeting of the Southold Town Tree Committee was called to order at 6:00 PM—this
was an in-person meeting—and held via Zoom. There was no meeting held in December.
Discussion Items:
Former Tree Committee members Mike Domino and Tom Stevenson were in attendance at our
meeting to give their thoughts/ideas about the proposed Town Tree Code. Their main concerns
were that the Code should prevent clear cutting of vacant lots; and that it should protect specimen
trees.
Gerard reported on the first Code Committee meeting for the proposed Tree Code wherein the
code was gone through page by page with detailed notes being taken by Town Attorney, Julie
McGivney to make future updates/changes. The next part of the process will be to finish going
through the remainder of the Code for updates/changes, and to then schedule a second meeting
hopefully sometime in February.
Councilwoman Smith will be creating a handbook for all of our Town Committees which will
detail the individual committee's mission statement, goals, members.
Ideas for the pickleball court in East Marion for noise mitigation were discussed. The Committee
has some ideas that would be suitable but feel that one or two of them should visit the site again
to make a better determination.
The request for a re-planting of the trees that were taken down at 1555 Cox Neck Lane will be
looked at by the Committee for suitability and placed on our 2025 Planting List. Supervisor's
office was apprised.
Committee Member Don Grimm will not seek a re-appointment of his term.
Committee will move forward with preparation for our Arbor Day activities. The second
(reminder)letter has now been sent to all the participating schools, the schools have been contacted
for their class sizes, pencils will be ordered, seedlings and activity sheets will now be ordered. A
committee person must pick up the posters from the participating schools on 2-7-25.
We will next meet on February 19, 2025. This meeting was adjourned at 7:15 p.m.
Respectfully submitted, Diane DiSalvo
