I have been a resident of Southold for 12 years now and live at 12250 Soundview Avenue. I am requesting that the area West of Soundview Avenue at Kenney's Road and Hortons Lane, and the side streets which are within very close distance of both Kenney's Beach and McCabe's Beach namely; Leeton Drive, North Sea Drive, West Drive, and Lake Drive have the speed limit lowered to 20 MPH. The speed limit West of North Road at Kenny's Road and Hortons Lane, which leads to both Kenney's Beach and McCabe's beach, is currently 30 MPH. While 30 MPH may be fine between North Road and Soundview Avenue, it is not fine or safe for the area between Soundview Avenue at Kenney's Road and Hortons Lane and the two beaches. One has to assume as well that when the speed limit is 30 MPH, there will be cars driving up to 40 MPH or faster. This area has a lot of foot traffic from families and all sorts of person's that are headed to beaches, the local restaurant, walking for leisure, therapy, or exercise.Additionally the roads in this section are very narrow, have no sidewalks, and have several blind spots namely the intersections at Hortons Lane and North Sea Drive, West Drive and Lake Drive, Leeton Road and West Drive, and Kenney's Road and West Drive, making it even more challenging to manage space safely. I have personally tested driving 30 MPH along the named section and it is much too fast for such a community. When I drive at 20 MPH, it is much more acceptable and allows for a better reactive need in the case of people coming out of blind spots or driveways. I don't think this would be a hindrance to drivers given that most non-residential traffic are commercial contractors that are parked in the area to do work and not needing to drive fast to get to any local place. I absolutely believe that addressing and accepting this request would be a huge benefit and sigh of relief for both local residents and tourists frequenting the area. I also think that having a more safe and acceptable speed limit in this area would definitely add to the Beach and Family style community we have welcomed here for many years. Please consider and honor this request, as I think the benefits greatly outweigh any need for speeding and having an unsafe situation create an unwanted or unexpected incident to be regretted. I have attached a picture of the area. Regards and I look forward to your response, Freddie Diaz Phone: 917-741-0820 ATTENTION:This email came from an external source.
