Hello Supervisor Krupski,
I hope the new year is treating you well.
I'm writing on behalf of the Mattituck Chamber of Commerce because of our concerns regarding the safety of the
Main Road for pedestrians here in Mattituck.
Our first concern is the cross walk on the Main Road and New Suffolk Avenue. It crosses the Main Road in front
of the Handy Pantry. It's great to have it there, but it's potentially deadly as it is. As a motorist, you don't see
people waiting to cross and if you stop to let people cross, you run the risk of being rear-ended. As a pedestrian,
walking across is chancy, at best.
On the South Fork, Montauk Hwy runs directly through the town of Bridgehampton. There are several crosswalks
that are not at corners and these have signs with a flashing light bar that go on with the touch of a button. It alerts
drivers on both sides of the road that someone is about to cross there. They stay flashing for about 45 seconds
and then turn off automatically. It's simple and effective (photo attached) and would be a great solution here in
Mattituck.
The second concern is the lack of sidewalks on the south side of the Main Road, particularly from the Library all
the way past CVS, and perhaps even to Bray Avenue. Every day I see people walking along the Main Road on
the south side shoulder. This last week in particular, with the snow and the rains, people won't walk on the grass
and they're walking outward in the road to avoid puddles. It would be good for business to have walking traffic
that connects the town, and it would look nicer too, but safety of our community and visitors is paramount.
I understand that this is a State Road, so I'm looking for guidance (aka help) in who we should reach out to and
the best way to do so. I'd like to move on this as soon as possible.
Thanks for any help you can provide.
Sincerely,
Terry McShane
