June 8, 1960
Report: Southold Town Board
Southold, New York
Gentlemen~
This is to certify that the following action was taken by
the Southold Town Planning Bard at its meeting on June 7, 1960=
In the matter of the petition of Mary Doroski and Theodore
Doroski for a change of zone from "A" Residential and Agricultural
District to "B" Business District on certain real property situated
at Cutchogue, New York, and more particularly bounded and described
as follows=
The legal description is identical to the one I read in the
legal notice. The report goes on to say:
RESOLVED that the Planning Board recommend to the Town Board
that the change from "A" Residential and Agricultural District to
"B" Business District be made on the aforementioned propery.
Some of the members of the Planning Board are familiar
with the operation. They have been packing potatoes for at
least one of their neighbors for many years prior to zoning
and for the past two years they have been buying substantial
quantities of potatoes. In addition to that we feel that an
5
additional independent outlet for Long Island Potatoes is probably
an asset to the community. Finally, this property is adjacent to
a "B" Business District and not too far distant from an additional
"B" Business District on the same side of the Street.
Respectfully submitted,
Xsigned) John Wickham
John Wickham, Chairman
Southold Town Planning Board
We also have a petition in the file to the Town Board of
Southold stating that Mary Doroski and Theodore Doroski, both
residing at Cutchogue, Suffolk County, New York, the undersigned,
are the owners of certain real property situated at Cutchogue,
N.Y. and more particularly bounded and described as follows:
and the legal description is the same as the one read previously.
The petition states they are petitioning so that the aforesaid
premises be changed from
to "B" Business District.
Such request is made for
lying immediately to the west are already in
District and are used for commercial purposes
"A" Residential and Agricultural District
the following reasons: The lands
"B" Business
- namely, as a
garage. A gasoline station is being operated about 560 feet to
the east. The character of the neighborhood is therefore already
partially "B" Business in character.
The premises have been used, in part, for grading of
potatoes grown on the adjoining lands. The owner and tenant
6
desire that same be used henceforth for grading potatoes
commercially, and wi~ to have said business operations in
compliance with the Zoning Ordinance.
This pertition is signed by Mary Doroski and Theodore
Doroski.
I wish to say before anybody speaks, please give your
name and address to Mrs. Boken so she may record it for the
record.
Is there anyone who wishes to speak in favor of said change
of zoning?
GORDON M. LIPETZ, 175 Griffing Avenue, Rlverhead, New York:
I appear in behalf of Mary Doroski and Theodore Doroski, her son.
There is little I can add to what is in the petition. The son,
Theodore Doroski, wants to raise potatoes. I was informed by the
Building Inspector he cannot grade potatoes commercially unless
there is a change to Business. The potatoes that had been graded
in the past were potatoes grown on their own land. They want to
be in compliance with the Ordinance. There will not be any
disruption of the neighborhood if the potato plant is located
some distance from the road. They intend to purchase potatoes
from other farmers that will be graded. If there are any questions
I will be glad to answer them. The basic story is contained in
the petition. Are there any questions?

application. We will be grading potatoes the first of August.
We will want to hear by then.
COUNCILMAN ALBERTSON: We will make a decision within the
next 15 minutes.
SUPERVISOR TUTHILL: Do any members of the Town Board have
any questions or anything to say?
COUNCILMAN ALBERTSON: Mr. Stelzer says what is the issue
here. I would like to explain for the benefit of those who have
never attended one of these hearings before, that it lsnecessary,
according to law, to have a hearing and hear everybody in favor of
or against such petition. In many instances nobody is opposed to it.
SUPERVISOR TUTHILL: If there is nothing more to be said I
will call this hearing adjourned.
