This Regular Meeting of the Southold Town Tree Committee was called to order at 6:00 PM—this
was an in-person meeting—and held via Zoom.
Minutes from the April 17, 2024 meeting were approved. (No meeting was held May or July)
Secretary was not able to attend June meeting—so no minutes prepared for June).
Discussion Items:
The Request for Proposals (RFP) "Guidelines and Instructions for Tree Purchase and Installation"
has been published and we now await the bid results. Upon our receipt of the results we will
choose a contractor and then submit our choice by email to the Town Board and Town Attorney.
The Town Clerk will then put a Resolution on the next available Town Board meeting for a
Resolution approving the chosen Contractor. Once this has been accomplished the Tree
Committee will go out and re-update our list for the Fall planting spots. We will be incorporating
our list from 2023 into our current 2024 planting list. Gerard would like to have 3-4 committee
members collaborate on locations and start leaving door hangers at specific planting spots. A list
should be compiled of where the door hangars have been placed, so that if calls start coming in
with requests they can be handled accordingly.
The 4 h of July parade was a success. Bookmarks from this year's Arbor Day poster contest were
handed out to the crowd.
Dave Gamberg attended the Fishers Island Town Board meeting on Wednesday, August 7 and
reported to us.
The Committee has submitted their 2025 Budget proposal to Accounting Dept.,which request will
be the same as last year's.
Discussion was had regarding the removal of the "historical" American Beech tree which was
taken down on Peconic Lane. According to"The Trees of Southold"booklet published in October
of 2000,the tree had a diameter of 15'6"per. The Committee is in the hopes of getting a protection
clause included in the upcoming Town Tree Code to preserve and protect against the unnecessary
removal of the Town's historic trees.
Zoom Attendees were given the opportunity to speak and ask questions, which were addressed by
Gerard. Carol Brown advised us that the Conservation Advisory Council is in the process of
compiling a booklet which will be a home owner's guide for realtors, civic associations, etc., to
educate people on the Town's procedures and rules. She will send us the portion which is
dedicated to trees.
We will next meet on September 18, 2024. This meeting was adjourned at 7:15 p.m.
Respectfully submitted, Diane DiSalvo
