You have been here before for permission to plant some screening trees and also to trim encroaching phragmites that were creeping towards the back of the house. The issue now is the area in front of the county mosquito ditch has become something of a sunken bowl. As of this writing, it is still holding water from the last rainstorm. In other words, there is standing water in it. The county came last spring—for the first time in at least 10 years— and cleaned out the ditch from where it begins in the low spot of Stillwater Avenue down to the top of East Creek. The foreman of the crew dug a small channel, maybe two feet in width, at the low point of the bog he thought would help drain it. When you come, you can see that small cut. I had Chris Pickerell from Cornell Cooperative Extension at the house last week. He's a very smart guy on these kinds of issues. His first thought was to try and put sand down to level the bog and make it even with the ditch. But later he settled on another way. His later thought was to open up four or five of the narrow cuts so that any water that collects in the bowl can drain back into the mosquito ditch. Then he said, stop trimming the phragmites and let them grow back and don't remove leaves there in the fall. Over time, he said, the bowl would fill up and would likely stop the flooding during heavy storms, but would not stop the rising bay levels. Anyway, if you all came come over and we can talk this through and come up with the best solution. The one estimate I had from a landscaper on what he thought was best was absurdly expensive and likely not to accomplish anything. Maybe Chris has a better solution over time. Let me know a time when you can come and I will be here.
