Box 1179 Southold, New York 11971 Fax (516) 765q823 Telephone (516) 765-I801 OFFICE OF THE TOWN CLERK TOWN OF SOUTHOLD THIS IS TO CERTIFY THAT THE FOLLOWING RESOLUTION WAS ADOPTED BY THE SOUTHOLD TOWN BOARD AT A REGULAR MEETING HELD ON AUGUST 11. 1992: WHEREAS, the Town of Southold has recently received the log of Captain William Sinclair, the first Horton Point lighthouse keeper, as well as Captain Sinclair's naturalization papers; and WHEREAS, the Town Historian Antonia Booth has advised the Town Board that the most appropriate place for these significant historical documents is the Nautical Museum at the Horton Point Lighthouse, and has requested that the Town Board lend the artifacts on a long term basis to the Southold Historical Society; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the Town Board of the Town of Southold that Supervisor Scott L. Harris be and he hereby is authorized to execute an agreement between the Town of Southold and the Southold Historical Society providing for the lending of these documents to the $outhold Historical Society for display at the Horton Point Lighthouse Nautical Museum. ~'Judith T. BOX 1179, 53095 MAIN ROAD SOUTHOLD, NEW YORK 11971 (516) 765-1~81 AUgust 4, 1992 To; SuRervisor Harris and Southcld Town Board me/nbers: Recently a young man gave me the log of Captain William Sinclair and the Captain's naturalization papers dated 1825. .Sinclair was the first keeper of the Hortcn Point Lighthouse and his 10g gives de~ails of the building of the lighthouse and of its maintenance. I have no place suitable to display these significant artifacts and, in any event, believe the most appropriate place for them is on display at the nautical museum at Horton Point, Southold. Clifford Ben~ietd, who has done. so much work on the museum, assures me that the alarm systems and anti-theft devices the Southold Historical Society has had installed are more than adequate to protect Captain Sinclair's log and natu~alizc%ticn papers. In order that these items, so important to Southold's nautical history, be available to the widest audience., I am asking Supervisor Harris and members of the Southold Town Board to lend these them on a long-term basis to the Southold Historical Society for d~splay at the nautical museum at Horton Point. (516) 765-1981 AGREEMENT THIS AGREE~,~ENT made the 11th day of August, SOUTHOLD, a municipal corporation of the State of New York, office at 53095 Main .Road, Southold, New York (hereinafter SOUTHOLD HISTORICAL SOCIETY, a not-for-profit corporation, 1992, between the TOWN OF having its principal "Town"), and the having its principal office at Main Road and Maple Lane, Southold, New York (hereinafter "Historical Society" ). WHEREAS, the Town has recently received the Log of Captain William Sinclair, the first Horton Point lighthouse keeper, papers; and WHEREAS, Town Historian Antonia Booth most appropriate place for these significant as well as Captain Sinclair's naturaliZation has advised the Town Board that the historical documents is the Nautical Museum at the Horton Point Lighthouse, and has requested that the Town Board lend the artifacts on a long-term basis to the Southold Historical Society; NOW, THEREFORE. IT IS AGREED AS FOLLOWS: 1. The Town will lend the aforementioned historical documents to the Historical Society for display at the Horton Point Lighthouse Nautical Museum. , 2. The Historical Society will take every reasonable precaution and step to insure the safety and preservation of these documents. 3. Although the Town anticipates that these documents will be on a long-term loan, the Town shall have the right to have these documents returned to it at any time by way of a Town Board resolution upon notice to the Historical Society.
