HomeMy WebLinkAboutVillage Ln, Orient October 5, 2023 RECEIVED Transportation Commission Town of Southold 10CT 1 0 2023 53095 Rt 25 PO Box 1179 Southold Town Clerk Southold NY 11971 Dear Commission Members: I am writing to make you aware of a hazardous condition that exists on Village Lane in Orient NY. This is a narrow street that is frequently used by large construction and commercial vehicles to get to other areas in Orient. A few years ago, the town restricted parking on Village Lane because it posed a hazard when vehicles were parked on both sides of the street. We were not opposed to that restriction, and it has made vehicular traffic move more smoothly and proven safer for pedestrians, especially children, heading to/from the Yacht Club. The issue that I am experiencing now is that whenever there is new construction in another part of the Village, large commercial vehicles use Village Lane to get to their destination. This week alone we have had a few trips by Riverhead Building Supply, portable john deliveries, propane gas deliveries, and septic system concrete rings. When construction on a home begins or ends, we also have large construction machinery moving through the Village. Currently the destination of these vehicles is not on Village Lane, but on Narrow River Road and the far end of King Street near Narrow River Road. Instead of traversing the narrow lane through the heart of Orient Village, it would make more sense for these vehicles to take either Tabor Road or Narrow River Road itself. They would then avoid the maneuvering along Village Lane, the slower speed limit, and the hazardous turn at the end of Village Lane onto King Street. A route along Tabor or Narrow River Road would impact no, or few, homes along those routes. It would be safer for pedestrians, easier for the large vehicles to traverse wider roads, and would save the tree branches along Village Lane that are occasionally brought down by these large vehicles moving too close to the verge. I'd like to propose a restriction on large commercial vehicles on Village Lane (unless their destination is Village Lane.) Using alternate routes may not seem as direct for those vehicles, but would be safer for all concerned, and would result in less wear and tear on the roadway itself, which is currently not in great condition. Thank you for your consideration. Margaret Minichini 1995 Village Lane Orient NY 11957 . mei&rniirl @,!n we)rrl Tel: 631-833-4622 Cc: Daniel Goodwin, Superintendent of Highways Southold Town Board
