Dear Mr. Gada,
Pursuant to Harold Cook's request and in his and your
presence I visited the above referenced on 3/20/91. The
purpose of the visit was to review the connection of the
roof arch to the column at the location where the contractor
had removed the plaster and to review additional distress.
The connection is essentially what we had shown on our
repair drawing. Consequently, the collars can be fabricated
as shown, after the field Measurements are obtained. Harold
pointed out some additional cracking which has developed in
the collar tie on one of the arches. It appears that this
was caused by the load from the ridge being transferred to
the collar by the vertical post. Since the collar tie does
net have sufficient bending strength it cracked.
Harold Cook indicated that he anticipates that he will have
all of the material and be ready for in,tailing the new
steel ties this week.
I informed Harold that it was acceptable to cut the steel
strap along the inside of the knee brace as required to
install the steel rods. Finally, I instructed Harold only
to install the ties, snug them up tight and not try to lift
the roof up or pull the walls in as indicated on our
drawings°

Dear Mr. Gads,
Pursuant to your request on March 8, 1991, I inspocted the
above referenced church strUCture in particular to review
the distress of wood arches which have spread laterally.
Present at this meeting were Father Paul Goumond, PastOr,
John Gada, Harold Cook, Contractore, and A. John Macchi,
I reviewed the conditions and took Some photos. Old prints
furnished to me indicated the church to be about 88 years
old. It appears that these wQod arches have spread at their
base forcing the side walls out of plumb in varying amounts
as much as 6" for the 11' height in sevesal areas. Wood
knee braces which were reinforced with a steel strap are
ineffective as they are on the compression side of tho
COnnection between the rafter and column.
A video tape furnished me by the contractor and received
today indicates the distress ks more critical than first
reviewed. Indications are that some distress has occurred
3ust recently and could be cause for alarm. Repairs cannot
be dolayed. If a high wind Storm is predicted this
structuro should not be occupied.

As a good. temporary measure it is proposed to use tie rods
across the bottom of the arche~ with a bracket to tie the
support COlumn and wood arches. A turnbuckle will be used
to pull the sides together.
If after theso ara in place and the appearance is not
acceptable, an exterior buttress can be constructed to
replace these ties. However, this will be more cOStly.
At present, it is very important to correct this condition
immediately,
