1. Minutes accepted as written
2. Follow up on Traffic Logix presentation. Discussion that we can keep the information in mind
should the situation arise. It was mentioned that rubber speed humps would be a problem
removing each year before snow plow season then installing again in Spring. If we recommended
any of the products they could be purchased through Sourcewell a competitive purchasing entity
created by the Minnesota legislature and approved by NYS. It was mentioned that rumble strip
grooves to alert drivers to stops or lights are commonly used. Dan has ordered 30MPH stencils to
paint near crosswalks when they do the annual painting of crosswalks. They do not use
thermoplastic because of snowplows.
3. Rational speed limits: Dan's list of town street speed limits is almost complete—and took his staff 6
months. The Chief is getting him 20 missing streets. The vast majority are 30MPH with some areas
35 and some subdivisions never given an area limit. Some School Zones are 20MPH or 25MPH.
Of the 100 roads over 30MPH very few are 40MPH. Dan said it will be useful to show on a map so
he will be discussing with John Sep. Hopefully next month the direction will become clear. Should
there be many different changes to be noticed and have hearings on or should the entire town
except #25 and #48 have 30 MPH.
4. Soundview Motel: Waiting on response from SCDPW on the lights proposed for the crosswalks. No
answer according to Heather.
5. Charging Stations. Sample RFPs provided for E. Hampton and Hempstead as well as a NYSERDA
designated contact. Discussed the difference between owning equipment and getting revenue, that
can be at a loss, or renting parking spaces and leaving everything up to the vendor. After the
meeting we saw that the electric charger behind Town Hall was unused and only marked for one
car even though it can charge two vehicles. If little used, one spot might be enough. Mary Bess
said the code needs to be updated to specify how long a car can be parked at a charger and will
bring what she knows about Greenport's stations to the Feb meeting. Suffolk County has a
contract. Next steps will be for Sarah to follow up with Denis about grants and talk to Michael
Collins and Tim at DPW.
6. Trash issue– Follow up on last week's ideas for Public Service Announcements, Public Cleanups,
Adopt-a-road program, Suffolk Times public service announcement for awareness, or? Charlie P.
mentioned that hiring staff to run an Adopt a Road program impractical. Maybe social media can
inspire volunteers like the one on Next Door. [Randy talked to Denis after mtg. about running 1/2
page public service notice.]
7. Transportation Funding Needs—Margaret suggested a sub-Committee to flesh out the proposal.
She, Randy and Heather will get together to work on it. Sarah spoke to Al Krupski about the
needed walkway from Vineyard View to Moores Lane and potentially south to the school. She is
waiting for a call back. Also Sarah has not heard from NYSDOT about our invitation to attend a
meeting and explain their approach to signing #25 for bikes as they rejected pavement markings
since the shoulders are used by pedestrians too. It was suggested that we also ask how cyclists
will be accommodated through the roundtabout at#25 & #48 when they meet with us.
8. New Business - Sarah emailed Alvin Schein about what he wants in the letter saying the Town will
receive and install the bike racks the group pays for. Denis may be able to find grant funds for
these.
A. Question about the County traffic task force and Sarah will reach out to Jonathon Keyes.
Dan saw traffic count machines at the same spots a couple of weeks ago—so we might
get off-peak data.
B. Request for a street light on Sound Ave near Kirkuk Av and Cedar Beach BnB. Group
voted to support it with DPW doing their investigation. Sarah will follow up.
C. Jim discussed an article about electric bikes and the lack of regulations and will send it
around.
9. Next Meeting will be Monday, February 27 at 10:30 AM.
