1. Minutes approved
2. Rational Speed Limits- Committee reviewed the speed limit map and discussed what to recommend to the
Town Board. An area-wide speed limit can be suggested to NYSDOT without a study and their guidance
recommends 30MPH with gateway signage that states "unless otherwise signed."To change a through-streets
requires a traffic study and Southold's would be#25 and Rt. 48—Peconic Bay Blvd. already 30MPH .
Idea floated to choose the large neighborhoods instead of town-wide speed limit. There were only a handful that
were not 30MPH already. Concern expressed that the north-south streets connecting #25 and Rt. 48.
Should remain at higher speeds. [Note that between 48 and 25,Alvah's and Bridge are 30 MPH while
Depot Ln, Cox, Elijah's and Aldrich are 40MPH.Also note the couple of 35 MPH and the random nature
of the communities that have 35MPH while most are 30MPH.] They would be considered collector streets. It
was brought up that there are no sidewalks or bike lanes and have residents even if sparsely populated.
Chief Flatley said area speed limits in developed areas- neighborhoods-definition from the State doesn't really
cover the entire town. He also said it would be impossible to enforce the entire town at 30MPH.
Sarah says she would not support the town-wide speed limit because of having to deal with collector streets.
Choose areas instead of individual streets.
Dan says we need speed limit signs. We only have a few speed limits to track so it is not a problem that we don't
have a single town-wide speed limit.
Ideas for town board: cautionary signage like watch for children.
Next: to town board:
Vote on sending two options to Town Board. ((Sarah will bring it to Town Board next mtg))
