1) Meeting called to order by Co-Chair,Valerie Shelby at 10:06 am
2) Approval of April 18, 2022 ABTF Meeting Minutes,after amendments and corrections made.
3) Val Shelby welcomes Daniela Menijar,new ABTF member. Daniela introduces herself to group.
4) Clarification on town beach access still needed. Sylvia, Emily and Sandra will meet after this meeting
to plan request to be made a Town Board Working Session on May 24, 2022.
5) LeRoy Heyliger expresses concern about status of Southold Senior Prom theme, and asked about
ABTF school liaison assignments. Liaison list review and members reiterated that Mike Domino
reported on this issue in April meeting. Suggested that ABTF review the Dignity for All Students Act
(DASA)for discussion at next meeting.
6) LeRoy Heyliger reports MLCA Bill Lynch Memorial Run was a great success
7) LeRoy Heyliger and David Schultz attended Diversity meeting with Mattituck Principal David Smith.
Mr.Smith was to create organic committees for diversity that are student-centric and student-
driven,and is an ongoing effort throughout the year. Next Diversity meeting is scheduled for May
31,2022 at Mattituck HS Library.
8) Review and Discussion of ABTF Activities for 2022
a) Farmworkers article introduced
b) SynergyCall for Nominations for the 2022 Helen Prince Award to be reviewed at June meeting
9) Reports:
a) Police Report by Chief Flatley.
i) Val asked Chief about Suffolk Coiunty Hate Crimes Report. Southold on it.
ii) Chief will be asking Town Board this week for guidelines on town beach requirements
iii) Update on January 4 TB incident. Suffolk County closed investigation and it was reported to
Town Board. Chief will send report to ABTF.
iv) LeRoy Heyliger expressed deep concern over shooting on Buffalo;said parishioners at his
United Baptist Church in Mattituck were fearful to attend services on Sunday following
shooting. Mr. Heyliger asked Chief Flatley for greater police presence at African American
churches in Southold Town.
b) Synergy—Val Shelby suggested coordinate with police to meet with students in school libraries
on various dates.Sandy reminded ABTF of"Coffee with a Cop" on May 22 at Southold General
in Southold. Sylvia encouraged at ABTF members to attend.
c) Juneteenth—Val Shelby will check with Riverhead ABTF to coordinate with them. Val
mentioned Hidden Colors—documentary—will follow up before Juneteenth.
d) August 13 is Community Picnic
10) School Reports
a) Oysterponds, no report—Carolyn Peabody left meeting before school reports
b) Greenport, no report—Cindy Smith absent
c) Southold, no report—Mike Domino absent
d) New Suffolk, nothing to report—David Schultz
e) Mattituck, LeRoy attends BOE meeting, next will be budget. He and David reported earlier in
meeting on Diversity Committee
f) Fishers Island, nothing to report—Sandra Benedetto
11) Sandra asked about follow-up on Erase Racism Seminars for local historical societies now that Elaine
Gross announced retirement. Val will follow up on this and report back to ABTF.
