land; The Cedars came into being as a result of the carefree childhood days of William.W.
ate henson and his future wife
P. Mary Millington Sing, whose roots dig deep into the Ori-,
ent past. But it all happened because of the foresight of Dr. Mark Stephenson,a first gen-
eration American, who found Orient to be a"safe place" for his children, and the. ood
fortune of Rev Charles Sing,an itinerant preacher, whose first assignment brought him into
s` the area.To understand this very special place you must first understand them.

What this is not Cedar Roots is not designed to report on vital statistics of family mem-

source that is important, but I do have copies of all deeds and wills that are mentioned. A

r die, so that part of the trust never took effect Although Charles Gillispie did notet the
house, he is remembered in the will, as he got the first $10,000 remaining after both
women died. One possible trustee of this estate was Henry Frederick Knoblock, for whom
Fred Sharman was later named.Knoblock was a close friend of the family. No idea why
Fred was named after him.
r
But the trustee turned out to be Charles Ayer, whoever he was. Ayer played an important
role. One of the provisions of the will was that following the passing of Sarah and Mary,
and the distribution to Charles Gillispie and some share to someone else,Ayer was to pass
the balance of the estate to the remaining brothers, sisters and their heirs. This was not of
particular interest, except that Charles purchased all the L. I. Sound Beach, bay beach,
creek and marshes in what was to be later known as Stephenson Beach in 1912 in a tax
1 sale. When Sadie was ill and in a rest home,Ayer drew up an Indenture in June 1954
that passed on to "tenants in common" all the land to the heirs in proportion to their
1 relationship to Charles Stephenson. It was recorded in January 1955. Two name that
showed up in this Indenture that are interesting is Sadie L.Reehill and Grace L Howard.
Were they nieces of Sadie Lewis Stephenson that she remembered her will?

The history of Stephenson Beach and it's implications for today's decedents as well as
future decedents will be explored in Chapter 16.
Sarah was a big lady who lived until she was 86. She loved to drive her stylish car. In the
summer she lived in Cedarcroft In the winter she lived with Mary in Brooklyn until Mary
died in 1933. What did she do after that? The Cedarc—roTt did have heat, but it was a coal
furnace. Did she shovel coal? She took in summer boarders who lived in the attic and were
required to follow very specific rules. The house was dark and she did little to update the
interior. When she died in 1955, with no offspring, she decided to will her home to
Virginia, her favorite niece. Virginia would not have property at the Cedars without this
gesture.
