Box 1179 Southold, NY 11971 RE: Fireplace Installation Hygom Residence Gentlemen: Please note that we have reviewed the fireplace installation at the above noted project and have reviewed the details for fireplace construction from the New York State Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code "Code Manual" (copy attached). It is our understanding, based on the details, that the minimum distance setback from the inner hearth or lining of the fireplace or chimney to combustible materials is 12". Should an 8" wall thickness be provided, a 4" minimum clearance to combustible material must be provided. In this case, the additional 4" space is filled with masonry material and a minimum of 12" of separation from the inner hearth to combustible material is maintained. Actually, according to the Code Manual, the 12" solid masonry construction would have allowed the clay lining to have been omitted which is not the case with this installation. Based on the Code Manual details and the actual installation, it is our understanding that the fireplace is constructed so that adjacent or nearby combustible material would not be heated to temperatures in excess of 175 degrees Fahrenheit.
