Subject: [SPAM] -Town of Southold Midseason Shorebird Report
Town of Southold Midseason Shorebird Report, June 2023 - North Fork
Audubon Society
June is usually plover chick hatch season, and hopefully most pairs have
either fledged their young by Fourth of July or have young that have
reached two weeks of age, when the chicks become more mobile and the
chance of fledging doubles. That perfect window of hatching just after
Memorial Day Weekend and fledging before Fourth of July, really helps
the plover's success rate.
The Town of Southold Police and DEC officers have had their hands full this season with folks
coming from Queens to fish at popular fishing spots. Unfortunately, this means there is also illegal
camping right next to nests, entry into symbolically fenced areas (sometimes breaking the
string), stepping on nests, dragging driftwood out from nesting areas,
walking into the dunes to urinate, urinating along the fence line, making
1
campfires against symbolic fencing, throwing dead fish into the fenced
areas near nests, walking through long lengths of nest sites, hanging gear
on fence posts, dragging coolers through shorebird nesting areas, litter and
overflowing trash blowing through the nest sites, in addition to local folks
driving ATVs next to nest sites and walking dogs off leash next to
symbolic fencing. Unfortunately, it does not seem to matter how much
string is installed nor how many signs in multiple languages are posted.
Some folks just lack respect for our town beaches, natural areas, and
protected wildlife. Most disturbances occur after dark and on weekends at
Mattituck Inlet, which is currently the most significant shorebird nesting
site on the North Fork, ahead of Orient Beach State Park.
On the upside, there are many wonderful people in the community who do care for our beautiful
beaches and support shorebird conservation. From dog walkers who leash their dogs and walk the
water's edge to folks who keep a watchful eye over their community beach. We encourage
volunteers (and community members) to call Town of Southold Police or DEC officers if they see
someone inside symbolically fenced areas, active illegal atv use on public property (or private
property that is not their own) or below mean high tide line, camping, or the harassment nesting
shorebirds (keeping birds off nests or any other harm).
