The column is embedded in a concrete caisson and assu~ed fixed at the base and will produce a bending moment ~{ the base when subjected to wind loads. It is safe in assuming the inflection point in the column to occur at % the distance from the base to the knee brace. For this condition assume the column.to be hinged at the inflection point, and ignore the wind loads acting below this point. The maximum moment Occurs at the point where the knee brace joins the column. Its' magnitude is the horizontal component of the reaction multiplied by the distance from the knee brace ½ way to the base of the column. Roof Snow Load 1.5 # / sq.ft. Dead Load 80 MPH Wind Load, Exp. "B" BI~C'rN~ A system judgement trusses. of bracing is used on the trusses. Experience and are called upon determining the bracing required for Diagonal bracing requirements are small and are designed only for tension. Diagonal bracing should be in no fewer than two ba~s, and is in the plane of the top chord and the plane of the columns. It is required to resist forces acting normal to the bent plane. A pair of transverse bents are connected together with..cross bracing. This is called a tower. In a very long building with ~he columns fixed at their base, this cross bracing becomes'less important in the plane of the columns, and may be eliminated as the columns transmit the forces to the foundation. Buildings are braced for wind loads on the gables, but this becomes less important as the building increases in length, and may be eliminated in long structures as the load generated in the ends is picked up by the roof system and side framing, delivered to the eaves and then transmitted bythe sidewall bays to the foundation. To facilitate this, sway braces are used in the end bays.
