Box 1179 Southold, New York 11971-1179 Re: 4445 Hallock Lane, Mattituck, New York 11952 SCTM #1000 - 1'12 - 1 - 3.1 Building Permit: #47677 Dear Ms. Nunemaker- On 14 April 2022 I was given a permit to build a 700sgft addition to my own house in Mattituck. The work was a one-story,addition with a bedroom, bath,laundry and closet; above this was a smaller space (400 sgft) for dry storage. The property on which my house is built is laden with clay; also my Western neighbor raised his property 3'blocking the natural flow of water in the area. This all contributes to my having a chronic infiltration of water in my basement. Having closed my architectural practice in NYC, I have a great deal of paper records to store. Anxious to remove them from the moisture in the basement, the space above my addition seemed the safest place to protect them from mold and mildew. In late October last year I came in and spoke with the Building Inspector about changing the access to this upper area from a drop-down stair that came thru a ceiling to a drop-down stair that came down in a cathedral ceiling space. This was to make it easier to hoist stuff up to the dry storage area. He thought that this change would likely be acceptable; he asked that I submit amended drawings. This I did about 3 days later in early November. When submitting my revised drawings I chatted with the woman who accepted the drawings. I explained that the changes included: 1. A drop-down stair in a cathedral space. 2. A reduction in the upper storage area from 400sgft to 300sgft. 3. A larger foundation (adding 20sgft to the footprint), still meeting all set back rules. 4. Two small closets - one for out of season clothes and the other a cedar closet. 5. An increase in the building height of 1'6", still well below the maximum permitted. This was to incorporate 3 extra windows that needed a home. Thus,when I came into the Building Department more than 4 months after submitting the changes, I was distressed to learn there was no record of the changes that I had submitted in early November. You asked that I send you photos of the upper storage area as built so that you could understand what has been built. Photos are enclosed. I had come in to sort out the final electrical inspection. I found your inspector rude and arrogant. I do not want him in my house again. I was told that I could pay Certified to have them do the final inspection. When my Electrician called them, Christine said she needed authorization from your department. I called to ask that you provide this permission and was told that I needed to talk to the Building Inspector and that he would call. I have not spoken with him yet. The upper area of Dry Storage is a. Sealed to prevent moisture and mice&bug entry. b. Insulated to protect my papers from mold. I even have a fan to keep the air moving. c. Heated a small amount, again to keep the papers dry. At this point,the work is substantially complete. My contractor, Francisco Sarabia, feels that it would be best for him to call for a final inspection to let the Building Inspector judge what has been built.
