General Land Preservation
• Review— Ranking and Prioritization of Land Preservation Applications
The Committee reviewed its internal guidelines for prioritizing and ranking land preservation applications.
The Committee clarified that these guidelines have not been adopted by the Town Board, and that they
are used only to assess applications for the sale of development rights on farmland. Project prioritization
and ranking depend on available funding, adjacent properties' preservation status and use, soil quality,
and the suitability of the project's proposed design for farming. The guidelines were drafted to ensure
that the Town's limited resources are used to concentrate farming in core agricultural areas and preserve
land suitable for agriculture. The Committee also discussed the importance of preservation to the
viability of farming within the Town, the increasing financial difficulties that farming poses, and the
possibility that the Committee should in the future explore other methods that the Town could use to
encourage agriculture that is viable in the long term.
