Dear Denis, - nice to meet you briefly last September at Southold Town Hall. To give you a quick recap – I am addressing
the stop signs which were installed on either side of my driveway late last summer and are a huge problem for my
family. I had intended to follow up sooner but family issues have delayed this reach out to you.

These stops signs have dramatically impacted our lives in a negative and dangerous manner at 7540 Main Bayview
Road. From what I gather sometime during Covid, - someone must have lodged a complaint regarding Main Bayview
traffic flow and the town decided to block our driveway implanting stop signs on either side of our very short drive. We
did not hear anything about this impending change, - no one visited our home, spoke to us about this, - and due to
Covid . . . the announcements for tabled Town Issues was not communicated clearly.
We respect that the Southold Transportation Commission was trying to answer some complaint or perceived
problem. However, the impact and brunt of this change falls on us, -we are the residents in the home these stop signs
have constrained. Entry and exit from our driveway is dangerous and confusing. The noise and air pollution from cars
idling and revving to quickly stop and start is continually jarring. It is extremely difficult to enjoy our yard and property
being part of an intersection. This intersection is at the bottom of our short drive and there is a constant traffic jam with
cars gunning engines all day. This installation was never addressed with us prior, - and that in itself is quite surprising.
We implore you to reconsider this solution. We have already met with the Highway Commission to tell our story; we
th
have also attended a Southold Transportation Commission Meeting August 29 to discuss this situation. We offered to
pay for speed bumps – to relocate these signs, add hidden drive signs, slow children at play signs, - implant electronic
speed cameras -any solutions to alleviate this headache that has impacted us. We are very solid good compliant
homeowners.
We were told we needed to reach out to you next, - and appeal to the board.
Rationale we were given for these signs included a tragedy where a child that came out of our driveway 25 years ago
was hit by a car. With all due respect to this tragedy – any child riding a bike onto Main Bayview Road could be seriously
hurt from any driveway or street . From our parenting opinion it would be negligent to let a child ride a bike from a
driveway onto Main Bayview. Additionally we have no young children, no bicycles on property, and would never send
any person into traffic from our drive.
We were also told that the street across from us has blocked vision when making a turn onto Main Bayview. That is
absurd, - it absolutely does not – we have utilized that corner and turn may times with clear vision . No blocked vision.
There was a study commissioned 8/10/21 regarding this corner – Local Law (13-2021) – after looking into the Freedom
of Information Act, - the conclusion was that no stop signs were needed on this corner. We cannot imagine who had the
pull or complaints to make this come to fruition.
Can we please come up with another solution that satisfies everyone and penalizes no one. We are great solid Southold
home owners, who bought here for peace, quiet and a civilized lifestyle. Wehave been upended for no defensible
reason.
We are open to contribute to a solution. We would so appreciate a constructive conversation to move this forward.
Thank you – Susan Gould and Patrick Brennan
