inspection by Code Enforcement Official is required. If the owner chooses not to have said
inspection performed by the Town, a certification from a licensed architect, a licensed
professional engineer or a home inspector who has a valid New York State Uniform Fire
Prevention Building Code Certification is required stating that the property which is the subject
of the rental permit application is in compliance with all of the provisions of the code of the
Town of Southold,the laws and sanitary and housing regulations of the County of Suffolk and

Subject: Rental permit for 9555 Soundview avenue.
Dear Mike:
I never thought I would say this but the hunt to find out if the cottages were rented out before 1957 has
turned out into an absolutely delightful story and has made me feel connected to the town in a way I
would never have imagined and given me the history of the cottages in a really beautiful way.
My search for the previous owner,Arthur W Hahn Jr took me from an obituary in the Suffolk times of his
son Arthur W Hahn III to discover his homes in Greenport,to the First Presbyterian Church where the
family has a burial plot to the Diefriest funeral home and finally to his grandsons in Syossett.
On the way I found out that Arthur Hahn Jr built many homes and these cottages may have been one of
his projects that he rented out but never lived in them himself.
But I really had a breakthrough four houses down the road on Soundview Avenue where I met a lovely
old lady Kay Parks Rice who has been around a long time since her parents bought her house in 1949
and in a heartbeat gave me the proof I needed and very quickly told me dozens of stories of her
childhood on the beach playing with kids who rented the cottages in summer.
She connected me to someone in Maryland who as a child not only rented the cottages in the very early
1950's with her parents but met her now husband of 62 years while she stayed at the cottages and a
young boy looking for turtles in the lake asked her out on a date!
Its such a beautiful ending. it makes all the wait so worthwhile and has put the biggest smile in my heart.
Both Kay Parks Rice and Jean Rorke have kindly promised to write me an affidavit attesting to the fact
that the cottages were rented out before 1957 and also have photos to share with me.
But the most important one is attached here below.
I trust that the above will enable you to issue me rental permits for the cottages immediately.
