Mattituck, N.Y. 11952 Dear Ms. Wickham: I had a discussion recently with David Mastanduno concerning the requirements for the facilities for the physically handicapped required under Part 1100 of the New York State Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code. One of the requirements of this part of the code is that an accessible route be provided at the interior of a building. This would include each story of a building. An elevator would be the means of vertical : travel, %his has been included in the plans for North Fork Bank offices. Sec. 1100, 2B of Part 1100 states the following: "Buildings shall bo provided with an interior accessible route from the entrance used by the physically handi- capped to usable and adaptable spaces and rooms." In my opinion, if the first floor of %ha~ portion of the building containing the banks facilities contains all the elements required for the physically handicapped then the intent of the law has been complied with. The section of law I have quoted herein does not say, to all usable and adaptable space and rooms. Because of this do not feel that an elevator %o the second floor is man- datory. In view of this it may be prudent to provide the space (shaft) for a possible fut- ure elevator in this way making the building adaptable.
