The installer must write or imprint name, phone number, date of installation and sign in the appropriate space on the maintenance tag attached to the Power Ventero 4o Safety inspection procedure (see below) must be performed before installation and a final safety inspection must be performed on com- pletion of all installations. 5° Plan the vent system layout to avoid the pos- sibility of accidental contact with concealed wiring or plumbing. PROCEDURE FOR SAFETY INSPECTION OF AN EXISTING APPLIANCE The following procedure is intended as a guide to aid in deter- mining that an appliance is properly installed and is in a safe ' condition for continuin~ use. This procedure is predicated on central furnace, boiler and water heater installation and it should be recognized that generalized procedure cannot anticipate all situations. Accordingly, in some oases deviation from this procedure may be necessary to determine safe operation of the equipment. This procedure should be performed prior to any attempt at mod- ification of the appliance or of the installation. If it is determined there is a condition which could result in unsafe operation, the appliance should be shut off and the owner advised of the unsafe condition. The following steps are to be used in making the safety inspection: 1. Conduct a gas leakage test of the appliance and control system downstream of the shut off valve in the supply line to the appliance. 2. The appliance and its individual shut off valve must be disconnected from the gas supply piping system during any pressure testing of that system at test pressures of 1/2 psig (3.48 kPa)o The appliance must be isolated from the gas supply piping system by closing its individual manual shut off valve during any pressure testing of the gas supply piping system at test pressures equal to or less than 172 psig (3.48kPa). 3. Inspect heat exchanger for cracks, openings or excessive corrosion. 4. Inspect for evidence of water leaks. 5. Insofar as is practical, close all building doors and windows and other spaces of the building. Turn on any exhaust fans (range hood, bathroom exhausts, etc.) so they will operate at maximum speed. Close fireplace dampers. If after com- pleting steps 6-12, it is believed sufficient combustion air is NOT available, refer to local codes or the National Fuel Gas Code, ANSI Z223.1-1980, for introduction of make-up air. 6. Place appliance in operation. Follow lighting instructions. Adjust thermostat so that appliance will operate continuously. 7. Determine that burner ignition is satisfactory by turning the main power switch off and Ono 8. Visually determine that main burner gas is burning properly: no floating, lifting or flashback. Adjust the primary air shutter(s) as required. (If appliance is equipped with high and low flame controlling or flame modulation, check for proper main burner operation at low flame). Test for spillage at the draft hood relief opening after 5 minutes of main burner operation. Turn on all other fuel-burning appliances within the same room so they will operate at their full input. Repeat steps 7-9 for each appliance. Shut off the other fuel-burning appliances operated in step 10. Return doors, windows, exhaust fans and fireplace dampers to their previous conditions of use. Determine that the water pumps are operating properly° Test high temperature limit controls and relief valves to determine that they are operating properly. 11. 12. 13. 14. VENT PIPE TERMINATION NOTE: BEFORE INSTALLING POWER VENTER DETERMINE PLACE OF VENT PIPE TERMINATION. Power Venter must be installed as close to the termination of the vent system as possible to obtain optimal efficiency andto guard against flue gas leakage° Plan for the 90 horizontal turn that the Power Venter makes between inlet and outlet° All individual appliance vents must enter the vent system on the inlet side of the Power Ventero The vent system must terminate so that proper clearances are maintained as cited in local codes or the National Fuel Gas Code, ANSI Z223o1-1980, 7o14o3, as follows: "The exit terminals of a mechanical vent system shall be not less than 7 feet above grade when located ad- jacent to public walkwaySo A venting system shall terminate at least 3 feet above any forced air inlet located within 10 feet° The venting system shall terminate at least 4 feet below, 4 feet horizontally from or i foot above an~ door, window or gravity air inlet into any building." The manufacturer also recommends the following vent termin- ation procedures: The vent termination shall not be installed closer than 3 feet from an inside corner of an L shaped struc- ture, or not less than 1 foot above grade° Class 'B' vent pipe should be used to insure proper ventilation and to reduce combustion hazard. POWER VENTER INSTALLATION PROCEDURE CAUTION 1. Disconnect power supply before making wiring connection to prevent electrical shock and equipment damage. 2. Ail wiring must comply with applicable codes and ordinances. 3. When wiring is completed, check all components by running system tkrough at least 3 cycles. 4. Flue gas temperatures must not exceed 550°F at Power Venter inlet. 5. Air flow adjustment must be made for optimum appliance efficiency. 6. While this equilm~ent is not designed to replace combustion air intakes, it will assist in over- coming minor negative pressure conditions. If extreme negative pressure exists, provisions for introduction of adequate combustion air must be provided, (refer to # 5, "PROCEDURE FOR SAFETY INSPECTION OF AN EXISTING APPLI- ANCE'' ). 7. Failure to install, maintain and/or operate the Power Venter in accordance with these written instructions may result in conditions which can produce bodily injury and/or property damage. 1. Install tapered transition fitting on outlet of HYTECH boiler. 2. Install required sections of 4" vent pipe.from transition fitting to terminating wall. Allow a minimum of 18" vertical rise from the boiler before vent elbows to the horizontal. Vent pipe must be supported and spaced in accordance with its listing and the vent manufacturer's instructions. 3. Connect inlet side of Power Venter to 4" vent pipe as close to terminating wall as possible. Power Venter MUST BE MOUNTED WITH MOTOR SHAFT HORIZONTAL. 4. Securely support Power Venter to ceiling or wall using galvanized support strap. Connect outlet of Power Venter to through-the-wall pipe, using 4" elbow if necessary. 6. Check vent connections for leaks by using a soap solution as recommended by NFPA #54, ANSI Z223.1, Section 4.11-General. If necessary, seal connections with High-Temperature Silicone Adhesive Sealant. 7. Wire Power Venter, Sail Switch and Spillage Switch according to wiring diagrams which follow. Power Venter MUST BE GROUNDED. All wiring must be in accordance with the NEC and applicable local codes. WirLng should be protected by over-current protection (fuses or circuit breakers) rated 15 Amps or less, (as applicable for 14 AWG conductors). EXTREME CAUTION must be exercised to ensure that wiring does not come into contact with any heat source. 8. Check Sail Switch. Operation of switch can be determined by hearing a "click" as switch opens and closes. A click must be heard BEFORE sail blade touches either end of slot. If clicks are not heard, it may be necessary to change bend in blade slighty. 9. Check boiler and Power Venter operation. Air flow control on Power Venter must now be adjusted to prevent spillage at draft diverter. AIR FLOW 'ADJUSTMENT Capacity of the Power Venter may be adjusted by means of the Damper Control Rod. NOTE: Damper is pre-set for maximum air flowo 4. 5o o inateo Lock damper handle opposite side of housing. Adjust thermostat~to call for heat. Wait several minutes after burner ignition for flue gas temperature to,stabilize. Using a vel°meter, check velocity of flue gas at exit terminal. Using volume and velocity chart, below, match input of appliance with proper CF~ or FP~ column@ 50% dilution. Adjust damper so that velometer reading matches that derived from table° NOTE: Power Venter performance is very sensitive to damper adjustment° Only a quarter turn of the handle is required to close damper° Check for flue gas spillage at draft diverter. Approved method for checking is below, NFPA ANSI Z223.1-1984, Section 8°6: "°.°Equipment shall be operated for several minutes and checked to see that the combustion products are going up the chimney or gas vent properly by passing a lighted match or taper around the edge of the relief opening of the draft hood. If the chimney or gas vent is drawing properly, the match flame will be drawn into the draft hood. If not, the combustion products will tend to extinguish this flame° If the combustion products are escaping from the relief opening of the draft hood, the equipment shall not be operated until proper adjustments or repairs are made to provide adequate draft through the chimney or gas vent." If spillage is detected, open d~nper just enough to elim- in place by means of locknut on EXIT VENT VOLUME AND VELOCITY CHART FOR AIRFLOW ADJUSTMENT SAFETY INSPECTION MUST NOW BE PERFORMED SAFETY INSPECTION ' " The Power Venter integral Sail Switch is the primary safety fan prover° The Draft Spill~ge Switch is a redundant safety device. Switch opens at 170 F and is NANUALLY reset° Refer to Trouble Shooting Hints, below° 1o Shut off gas supply to the appliance° 2o Connect a volt meter or test light to electrical ter- minals of the gas valve~ 3o Adjust thermostat to call for heat° Power Venter will start immediately° Result: Volt meter should read proper voltage or test lamp should light° 4. With Power Venter operating, block vent pipe at exhaust side of Power Ventero Result: Safety Sail Switch will de-energize gas valve. 5° Re-establish gas supply to appliance° 6° Disconnect electrical supply to Power Ventero 7o Adjust thermostat to call for heat. 8° Nanually fix Sail Switch to remain open. CAUTION:' VENTER NAY BE HOT TO TOUCH. Result: Flue gases should be emitted from draft divertero 9° Wait approximately I minute. Result: Draft Spillage Switch will disrupt gas control° Push reset button in the center of the Spillage Switch° Repeat spillage test, steps 6-10. Visually determine that gas is burning properly; no float- ing, lifting or flashback. 10. 11. 12o TROUBLE SHOOTING HINTS 1o If volt meter or test light does not read proper voltage: -check reset button on Spillage Switch -check termlnal connections -check if thermostat is calling for heat 2o If Power Venter does not operate upon a call for heat: -check electrical connections from Power Venter to control -check "breaker" on Power Venter clrcuit 3~ If Sail Switch does not de-energize gas valve with blocked vent pipe: -check vent pipe system for leaks -check if Sail Switch blade moves freely 4o If spillage does not emit from draft diverter when appliance is operating and electrical supply to Power Venter is disconnected: -check vent pipe system for leaks 5° If spillage out of draft diverter does not disrupt gas control after 2 minutes: -check reset button on Spillage Switch -check spliced connection between operating control and gas valve -check terminals on Spillage Switch MAINTENANCE The Power Vent Package must be inspected semi-annually° Points of inspection are: 1o Motor must rotate freely. Oil with 4 drops of SAE 20 oilo Wheel must be free of soot, ash or other coating which inhibits air flow or rotation 3. Sail Switch must operate freely. Listen for "click" as sail travels in sloto Replace if no click is heard. 4. Check vent Pipe and termination for obstructions. Proper flow of com- bustion gases must be maintained. 5. Check all vent connections for leaks and reseal where necessary° Replace deteriorated vent pipe and check new connections for leaks. Reseal using a High-Temperature Silicone Sealant such as Permatex Form-A- Gasket Red RTV, GE Red RTV 106 or equivalent WRONG TJERNLUND LIMITED ONE YEAR WARRANTY Minnesota 55110. (612) 426-2993.
