PART 1: The Installation Within Your Home
When choosing where to place a stove in your home, there are
several factors to keep in mind. Of course, if you will be connecting
your stove to an existing fireplace or other pre-existing chimney, the
decision of where to place it will have already been made. If you do
have a choice, you should try to install it in a central location, This
way, its heat can reach more parts of your house. If installed at one
end, heat may have difficulty reaching the other. Id your house has
more than one story, placing it on a lower floor will enable you to
take advantage of the natural rising of warm air to heat the upper
level. If placed on an upper level, the stove will probably not haYe
much impact on lower floors. Placing your stove in a larger, open
room is preferable to a small, closeddn one. If the area is dosed-in,
heat will have trouble flowing to other rooms. The use of ceiling
fans and other heat movers is very helpful for taking full advantage
of your stove's heating power.
The other factor to keep in mind when choosing a location for
stove is which areas you use the most. You can better take advan
rage of your stove's heating capabilities if you place it in an area
regularly use, such as a family or IMng room. This way your stow
need not be forced to heat the entire house to keep you comfort.
ably warm through the
There are two type~ of installations from which to choose--
freestanding or fireplace A freestanding installation is one with ti'
stove set up on its own. A fireplace installation can be either a
fireplace insert (with the stove set into the fireplaceL or a fireplac
adapter {similar to the freestanding except that the flue is vented
to the fireplace chimney).
Freestanding Installations
A freestanding stove can be placed no closer to a combustible wall
than the minimum permissible clearances to combustibles allow. For
the definition of a "combustible wall," see the section entitled 'qte-
ducing Clearances By Protecting Your Walls." The minimum clear-
ances to back and side walls for Consolidated Dutchwest stoves are
shown in Table 1 (check with the manufacturer for other makes).
Distances were determined through individual testing of each model
by Arnold Greene Testing LaboratoriestCONAM of Natick,
Massachusetts, in accordance with applicable UL and other stand-
ards. Column '~SW' shows side wall clearances; column "BW'
shows back wall clearances. Table 1 also shows certain protected
clearances which will be explained in the following sections.

pie of the latter is a brick wall with
the brick built upon wood studs.
This is considered a combustible
wall despite the fact that the outside
is not combustible The reason it is
so considered is that heat can pass
through the noncombustible
material on the surface to the com-
bustible material inside, resulting in
a possible hazard. If there are or
may be any combustible materials in
your walls, )~u should treat them as
being combustible~
Clearance Reduction Kits
The first, and easiest method of solidated Dutehwest stove is with a
reducing the clearance to a com- clearance reduction kit. }{its at~ach
bustthle hack wall with a Con- to the stove hack and can be
installed in a few minfites. These
kits are meant to be used only for
reducing clearanceq to a back s~ll
(most settings have enough room on
the sid~ so that it is unnecessary to
reduce side wall ctharances further).

reduction kit goes with which

reduced clearances are also show

single wall (black) pipe requires protection for the first three or four feet.
This is needed because the pipe is now closer to the combustible wall thru
usual, and the first Oo*~st) sections of pipe are the hottest. All Consolidat~
Dutch~t stoees, except the Adirondack, require the first three feet of sin[
wall pipe be protected with p~pe shields. The Adirondack (modal FA26?CL
requires the first four feet of single wall pipe to be protected. Alternatively,
you can use double-wal] pipe instead of single wall {double-wall pipe does r
need to be shielded ff it is located at least 6" from any combustible i,.alls).

Floor Protectors
Freestanding stoves require that
floor protectors be placed beneath
them ff they are placed on a com-
bustible floor. Here, the definition of
a "combustible floor" is similar to
that of a "combustible ,aall' given
earlier If there are any combustible
materials within the floor, it consti-
totes a "combustible floor," even if
the mator~al on the surface is
non-combustibl~
Floor protectors should be con-
stmcted of 3/8' mfltboard or its
ecluivalent. Double thicknesses (two
layers) should, however, be used with
the following radiant models:
FA2OTCL, FA209CL, FA211CL,
FA224ACL, FA267CL. Check with
file manufacturer for proper
thicknesses to be used with other
stove brands. Contact ~ur local
building inspector for suitable
equivalents to millboard under local
ordinances. Frequently, la)em 6f
brick, over a thin plate of steel or in
a sand base, bordered and secured
with quarter round molding, is an
acceptable alternative.
Floor protectors must be of certain
minimum dimensions to meet code
requirements. The protector must
protect the area immediately
beneath the stove plus specified
areas to each side. Check with the
stove manufacturor for specifics per.
t/fining to particular models. Table 7

Fireplace Adapter and Fireplace Insert Installations
The fireplace adapter and fireplace insert installations are similar. A
fireplace adapter is a freestanding stove set on a fireplace hearth. A
fireplace insert is a stove which fits directly into the fireplace, with
plates that seal off the fireplace opening. The same clearances apply
to each instalIation, so they will be discussed together.
Clearances To Combustibles
Clearances from th~ back of the
stove will not apply to fireplace a-
dapters or inserts since there is only
the noncombustible fireplace behind
it, Side clearances do apply, since
there could be combustible materials
alongside the heater. However, it is
unusual for this to occur within the
clearances unless s~ur fireplace is in
tempt to put furniture too close
If your fireplace has a combustible
(~oden} mantel, you will have to
obserre the mantel clearance. This
is because a fireplace adapter or in-
sert is located directly below the
mantel, If your combusOble mantel
is too close, there are a number of
to remove iL Another is to protect
it. This can be done by having a
piece of sheet metal sized to protect
the mantel. Secure it 1' hdow the
mantel with noncombustible spacers.
You can paint the protector to match
your fireplace, AItematively,-you can
purchase a prefabricated mantel pro-
tector (we offer one in our m~in
catalogue). You may also have to
remove or protect any decorative
side trim on the fireplace if that
side trim sticks out into the room.
Table 8 (and figure 7) shows pro-
tected and unprotected clearances to
side '~Is and mantels, along with
the side trim clearance for each

Floor Protectors For Fireplace Installations
Normally, floor protectom are not
needed for fireplace installations
since the stove or insert will be set
on the uoncombustible fireplace
hearth. However, some fireplace
hearths are not large enough to pro-
vide sufficient protection to the sides
and front of the heater (mus~
hearths are wide enough to ade-
quately protect the floor to the sides
of the heater, but many are not
deep enough to folly protect the
floor in fronti.
Table 9 shows how far ~om the
sides and front of each Consolidated
Dutchwest stove and insert the floor
must be protected. There are two
primary ways of providing this pro-
tection. One is to extend the ex-
isting hearth farther to provide the
necessarf protection. The second is
to purchase a pndabricated hem$h
extension. Consolidated Dutchwest
offers 12' and 18' hearth exten-
sions to go in front of the stove or
insert (see our main catalogue for
various so'lings of hearth exten-
sions). Figm-e 6 depicts a prefabri-
cated hearth extension placed in
front of a fireplace insert. ^lter-
natively, you can build a hearth
tension in keeping with the n~quiro-
merits for building a floor protector
(see the section on floor protectors
in this booklet). Note that if your
hearth is flush with the floor, a
raised hearth extender placed in
front of the stove ~,ill interfere
opening the ashdom on Consoli-
dated Dutchs~t fireplace inserts (it
will not pose a problem w;th flee-
standing "fweplace adapter" stoves
on legs). This makes widening the
hearth (or adding another layer of
noncombustible material on top of it
to rMse the stove) the better choice.
